6 tips for increasing word-of-mouth referrals
Fox Business
Especially when starting out, word-of-mouth referrals are the most effective way to grow your business. Even in high-tech companies, having a couple hundred evangelists who can't live without your product and will spread the word is incredibly important. A great product or service is clearly the No. 1 thing you can have to spur word-of-mouth growth. Number two (and possibly just as important as the first) is incredible customer service. But beyond the obvious, what can you do? Here are a couple strategies that have been found to work well.

5 tax planning tips for your small business
Fox Business
Anyone who owns a small business should take advantage of the mid-year off season to sit down with a tax pro to discuss their financial statements and potential tax liabilities. It's infinitely easier to strategize and put a plan in place now than to run around at year end upending pails of water on all the little fires that have been brewing all year. Here are some tips to discuss with your tax pro to improve your tax situation and hopefully keep working capital in your bank account rather than in Uncle Sam's pocket.

Insurance Business America

Can you really afford mediocre employees?
By Mel Kleiman
Hundreds of research studies have quantified the difference between an "A player" versus a "C player." Every one of them concludes that the difference in productivity and the impact on the bottom line is anywhere from 20 percent to over 1,000 percent greater return when you compare the best, most productive employees to those who are "average." While I've never met anyone who disagrees with this data, most managers and organizations continue to keep C players on the payroll.

Why you should buy an espresso machine for the office
You're going to make mistakes when you're a first-time founder. It might be renting out office space that's too big (or too small), spending too much on holiday parties or hiring a sales team when your product isn't ready to be seen by the masses. But the biggest mistake I've seen founders make is being less than generous when it comes to investing in people. I'm a proponent of expensive office coffee machines. That endorsement is often met with laughs, but consider the ROI of a $5,000 espresso machine.

3 green tea beauty benefits that will give you shinier hair, clear skin, and sweet smellin' feet
All tea contains polyphenols which are part of the riboflavin family. According to Web MD, these plant chemicals are known to have strong anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial AND antioxidant properties. The specific type of polyphenols that are rich in tea also have some serious anti-inflammatory benefits that can reduce the appearance of dark lines and blemishes on site. You can introduce green tea, black tee, and oolong tea into your beauty regimen as they all share the same mother plant (Camellia sinensis) and are just processed differently. Not a tea drinker? Shame on you. But not to worry! You can reap the benefits of tea by applying topically in the following recipes.

Coffee 101: Which roast is for you?
Wall St. Cheat Sheet
If you've ever held up the line at a Starbucks, you know how important it is to have your coffee facts straight before you reach the barista. But who can really blame you? Mellow, light, bold, balanced, dark, French, Italian, Espresso, Colombian — with all these kinds of coffee roasts, it's tough to keep the flavors straight. It's amazing how coffee culture continues to be so prevalent (even beloved), yet still so few of us seem to understand the flavors behind it. Many of us may know our roast preference by name, but do we really know the subtleties of what makes a "dark" a dark? Below is our guide to the basics of what characterizes each roast. You may be surprised!

The contract ended at $1.63 a pound, the lowest settlement since Feb. 18.

Greener buildings boost employee engagement
Companies of all shapes and sizes must consider the extent to which their buildings reinforce the goals and the workplace environment they seek, especially when those goals and environment are changing. One important dimension of this reinforcement is in some ways the most basic: making buildings healthier and more comfortable for employees with improved thermal conditions, air quality, ventilation and lighting. Not only obvious players — like healthcare leader Kaiser Permanente — but others, like Google, are focusing deeply on comfort and health in their buildings.
