White House steps up pressure for small business bill

The White House recently tried to turn up the pressure on Senate Republicans who they say are blocking a $42 billion bill to help small businesses. Senators plan to leave Washington at week's end for their August recess, and it appears increasingly unlikely that they can resolve an impasse on the bill before then. More

Coffee drops as rally to 12-year high went too far; cocoa rises

Coffee futures fell the most in two weeks on signs that a rally to a 12-year high went too far amid the outlook for plentiful supplies from Brazil, the world's largest producer. Cocoa rose. Arabica recently touched $1.815 a pound, the highest level for a most active contract since February 1998. Prices jumped 26 percent since June 1. Global coffee output may rise 12 percent to 135 million bags in the year starting Oct. 1, as Brazil's output climbs, the International Coffee Organization recently said. More

Pennsylvania tries vino vending machines

Shoppers have long used vending machines to buy products from chewing gum to DVDs, and in Pennsylvania, they can add wine to that list — as long as they are willing to take a breath test. Pennsylvania, one of nine state governments involved in retail alcohol sales, is taking a step toward allowing wine to be sold at grocery stores, but not right off the supermarket shelf as in most states. Instead, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is testing wine vending machines that require an ID and a breath test for intoxication, making the state the first in the nation to try the kiosks. Salty snack makers Snyder's of Hanover Lance, Inc. have signed a merger deal that creates the second largest salty snack company in the United States after Frito-Lay. Pretzel maker Snyder’s and sandwich cracker maker Lance, said they expect the new company to generate about USD30 million annually in synergies. For the year ended June 26, the two companies had combined net sales of about $ 1.6 billion, and operating earnings of $170 million. More
