Will the health care law help or hurt small businesses?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to government, businesses want certainty above all else. Investors, entrepreneurs and managers need to know the rules so they can properly execute decisions. As far as health care regulation is concerned, the landscape became less uncertain when Chief Justice John Roberts issued a near complete ratification of the Affordable Care Act on June 28. In the spirit of plain language, here is a breakdown of how the new law affects small businesses — including the benefits saved by the Supreme Court decision. More

Fox Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Credit cards ranked the third most commonly used source of capital financing, behind only bank loans and the earnings of the business. Figuring out when it makes sense to use credit cards in your business — and how best to use them — can be confusing. More

Corporate social responsibility: Distinction or distraction?
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is it more socially responsible for U.S. businesses to protect American jobs or provide employment for impoverished people in developing countries? To shun genetically modified foods or endorse their role in ameliorating malnutrition? To power their fleets with petroleum or use electricity generated by coal? Making judgments about which position is "right" is a slippery slope, because, like fair trade and social justice, corporate social responsibility is a fuzzy, malleable, eye-of-the-beholder concept. Despite the slew of new businesses waving the flag of ethical enterprise, it's still a tall challenge to do good by shopping well. The best businesses aren't always the easiest to find. Certifications like organic or Fair Trade help choose one coffee brand over another in a grocery store. Apps like GoodGuide or Free2Work let you scan a product to see if there's a better choice one aisle over. But when it comes to entire businesses — like which nearby restaurant serves sustainably fished salmon — there isn't much in the way of direction while you're out and looking for a good dragon roll. Sometimes, to follow through on your good intentions, you need that quickly dispensed tidbit of information, the proverbial last mile of research, right there at your fingertips. That's what apps are for. So, now there's Social Impact, the first GPS-based social enterprise finder. More
