Tax-credit deadlines near for small businesses

The Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are banding together to get the word out about the small-business health care tax credit. The tax credit is available when smaller employers — those with 25 or fewer workers whose average incomes are $50,000 or less — pay at least half of the premiums for employee health-insurance coverage. Higher coffee prices, driven by supply shortages and an unstable market, are making the daily cup of joe, whether it's brewed at home or at a restaurant, more expensive. The composite price for coffee, which combines world market prices and bean species, was $2.12 a pound in August, up from $1.57 a pound during the same time last year, according to the International Coffee Organization. WorldLife Water has introduced what Max Ben-Hamoo, president and Aspen, Colo., native, says is the first single-use water bottle to use completely biodegradable plastic. The bottles are manufactured by an Arizona company that treats the PET plastic with an additive that attracts microbes, thus speeding the decomposition of the material. (The bottles are also made without BPA, a plastic which Canada has banned as a toxic substance.) More

The Japanese branch of soft drinks company, Coca-Cola, is trying to emphasize its positive environmental attitude by installing LED lighting in new vending machines across Japan. LED lighting is often cited by environmental groups as having a positive impact on the environment due to its low energy consumption rates; Coca-Cola Japan estimates that compared to conventional lighting it could reduce the energy consumption of vending machines by 70 percent. More
