Coffee rally peaking as funds pare bets on surplus up 500 percent

The biggest rally in coffee in five years may be ending as the prospect of larger harvests spurs hedge funds to pare bets on higher prices, potentially cutting costs for J.M. Smucker Co., Kraft Foods Inc. and Starbucks Corp. Supplies of arabica, the world's most-grown coffee, will exceed demand by 6.67 million 60-kilogram (132-pound) bags in the year ending in September 2011, according to ABN Amro Bank NV and VM Group. That's the most in nine years and more than six times this season’s expected surplus. Speculators including hedge funds cut their net-long position, or bets on higher prices, by 8.4 percent since Aug. 17, regulatory data show. More

Forty years ago, almost all coffee was grown under the shade of the rainforest. Now, many coffee farmers have abandoned those techniques for clear-cutting. Host Guy Raz talks to Shalene Jha, a University of California researcher who's studying the environmental benefits of shade-grown coffee. While environmental benefits are great, taste is crucial, so NPR met up with Nick Cho of Wrecking Ball Coffee for an in-studio taste test. More

Pablo Paster wrote in Treehugger, "In past articles I have shown that boxed beverages have their advantages and are indeed better from an environmental perspective in the case of wine. But boxed wine is better environmentally because it is being compared to the current packaging of choice, heavy glass bottle. With drinking water, most companies supply their product in plastic bottles which is relatively light and recyclable. One company is betting on milk carton-like packaging to provide an ecologically-friendly alternative to traditional bottled water. The appeal of boxed water is to provide an alternative to traditional bottled water, which has become stigmatized as the poster-child of un-ecological consumption. Coke And Pepsi are vulnerable to tax on soda

During the debate over the Obama health care legislation, you could almost feel sorry for Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. Taxing soda pop and other sugary drinks seemed to be an idea gaining momentum, and not just to raise money to pay for government programs. The idea was to curb obesity and along with it some hefty health costs. A Yale study suggested a tax that raised soda prices by 10 percent would cut demand by 7.8 percent. The U.S. Agriculture Department calculated that a 20 percent tax would reduce caloric intake from sugary beverages by 39 to 49 calories a day per person in the U.S. More

PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America division will deploy five all-electric trucks in New York City this month as part of a green fleet expansion that will place 176 electric delivery vehicles on the road over the next year. The trucks developed by Smith Electric Vehicles can travel 100 miles on a single charge. They produce no tailpipe emissions and emit 75 percent less greenhouse gas than diesel-powered trucks. More
