Engineering a better cup of coffee
Inc. Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An industrial engineer and former Starbucks executive, Mike Caswell has long thought that there were things in the coffee industry that were just never offered to customers, namely freshness and choice. Historically, he says, companies marketed their coffee as fresh off the basis of when their coffee was brewed or how freshly ground it was. However, that's not really what makes the difference. "For a long time, everybody was ignoring how long ago the beans were actually roasted," Caswell says. "Industry insiders will acknowledge how important that is to quality, much like the freshness of bread. But because there hasn't been an industry-wide adoption of how to best provide fresh coffee, people don't want to talk about it." More

Sponsored by the California group, A Bunch of Carrot Farmers, the schools placed vending machines selling baby carrots in their cafeterias. The goal of the experiment: to see if teens' snack habits can be influenced if healthy alternatives are marketed the way junk food is. More

Corn refiners try to sweeten image of high-fructose syrup
GreenBiz.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Corn Refiners Association is attempting to change the name of high-fructose corn syrup, to eliminate what it calls "confusion" over the product among consumers. The organization, which represents those who make the syrup has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to let it call high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) "corn sugar" instead. The association said that consumers mistakenly view the product as high in fructose compared to other commonly used nutritive sweeteners such as table sugar and honey. More
