2015 state of the coffee service industry report: Set sail for continued and steady growth

It has been a tremendous growth year for office coffee service. In the second half of 2014 and the start of 2015, OCS revenues showed a jump of 5.5 percent over the previous year — a greater percentage of growth than in past years, including those preceding the Great Recession. The gain illustrates the opportunities in OCS, steered by economic factors motivating companies to provide quality coffee service to an expanding workforce.

Central America's slow recovery from coffee-ravaging epidemic

Coffee rust, or roya as it is known in Spanish, has been devastating coffee farmers throughout Central America for the past few years. The rust is a fungus, Hemileia vastatrix, that infects the plants' leaves, making them unable to absorb the sunlight they need to survive. Once the airborne fungus infects a plant, it is almost impossible to contain. The epidemic has ravaged coffee crops across Central America in the past few years, afflicting half of the one million acres of coffee planted in the region.

Does coffee give you a different buzz than tea?

Eighty-nine percent of American adults regularly consume caffeine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two-thirds get it from coffee, one-sixth from tea and the rest from soft drinks. People tend to assume caffeine is the only stimulant in these beverages, but tea, and even hot cocoa, contain other compounds thought to have psychoactive effects. And their levels of stimulation vary.

Sugar falls on lower imports, coffee rises in falling Brazilian real

Raw-sugar prices slumped lower recently as the market baked in higher exports from India as demand from China is weakening. Raw sugar for March delivery dropped 0.3 percent to 11.64 cents a pound on the ICE Futures U.S. exchange, continuing a slide that began when news broke that India would push mills to export 4 million tons of sugar in the year beginning Oct. 1.
