Why there's no such thing as a bad attitude
Harry J. Friedman
"He's got a bad attitude." "She's not a team player." "He's not a very pleasant person to work with." Does this sound familiar? It probably does. Every manager has had an employee who just wasn't part of the team. You advise the employee that he or she has a bad attitude or needs to be better at teamwork. So why doesn't that kind of advice solve the problem?

Poop, there it is: New test for exotic civet coffee
USA Today via KUSA-TV
Some coffee drinkers pooh-pooh the exotic and expensive coffee that comes from the Asian palm civet's poop, but it has become a tempting target for fraud. And there has been no standard test to determine whether products labeled as civet coffee, sold for $150-$227 a pound, are the real thing. Now, scientists say they have developed a way to authenticate civet coffee, according to a study published online July 27 in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Starbucks seeks to keep guns out of its coffee shops
The New York Times
Tired of being thrust onto the front lines of the nation's debate over guns, Starbucks is asking customers to leave firearms behind when they are in its stores and its outdoor seating areas. Under the change, baristas and other store employees will not ask customers who come in with guns in holsters, say, to leave or confront them in any way, Howard Schultz said. No signs explaining the policy will be posted in Starbucks stores, either.

On its own coffee is packed with health-giving antioxidants, but it's rarely the health drink it could be thanks to the ways most people customize it (think: Starbuck's GMO-laden Pumpkin Latte). The same is true for tea. Here are seven ways to make your coffee or tea a whole lot healthier.

US consumers drinking a latte more coffee
Forbes
According to the National Coffee Association, about 83 percent of U.S. adults drink coffee in one form or another. So that includes everything from a cuppa, brew, decaf, high-test, java, Joe, jamoch, brain juice and mud. Bottom line, an awful lot of coffee. Consumption is up 5 percent from last year, and that's 5 percent in the U.S.A., the world's largest market for coffee, and a $30-billion industry. Of all those consumers, about a third of them drink a "gourmet" coffee each day, meaning not just regular coffee and not even including regular coffee made from really expensive beans like Kopi Luwak, but a specially prepared brew.

Would you try coffee + food pairings?
Food Beast
Can you imagine how much more agonizing a trip to Starbucks would be if your barista started judging you on what pastry you got with your pumpkin spice latte? "Ooh, the chocolate croissant, are you sure? Because the bitterness of the cocoa will totally battle with the sweetness of the cinnamon. Better just go with a bagel. Plus it’s vegan (I think). Yeah, you're welcome." Well, like it or not, coffee is the latest beverage to go the old sommelier route, as the Coffee Collective coffee company in Denmark is now offering food pairings to go along with each of its specific drinks.

'Bad' leadership advice now 'good': Learn to fail, serve and just say no
Forbes
Efficiency has been replaced by effectiveness. Organizations have awoken to an era of social business, customer centricity, and new ideas of what constitutes a leader. Saying you embrace failure is like saying you think weakness is sexy. But many modern organizations are coming around to this idea that failure equates to pushing the envelope and trying unique ideas that were previously suppressed. You may fail 9 of 10 times, but if the 10th is a winner AND you mitigate your previous 9, you have a winning strategy.

Bubble tea: If you want to make it from scratch, you'd better plan ahead
The Washington Post
It's approaching 5 a.m., and the thoughts racing through my sleepless head are not suitable for a newspaper section whose favorite four-letter word is food. I'm on my third attempt at making bubble tea, and my tapioca pearls, after lounging in a large low-heat pot for more than four hours, have finally deigned to turn translucent and slightly gray. The problem is, they're still nowhere near the shade of black required. Personally, I'm ready to beat them black and blue and call it a night. How did I find myself in this kitchen nightmare?

Miller drinks tea for several reasons — to cut back on coffee, to increase her water intake, to help her lose weight and to help her sleep at night. She's one of many tea drinkers in the area who are sipping more of the stuff and experimenting with new ways to use it.
