The 4 interview questions that count
By Mel Kleiman
You can conduct a thorough interview with only four core questions. No more dreaming up talking points on the spot. No more planning or writing lists to remember everything you want to cover. International Business Times
Global coffee prices have plunged this year, and Starbucks Corp. expects to see a positive impact of $110 — $120 million in 2014, according to a presentation made at the Morgan Stanley Consumer Conference. Last year, they saw a $97 million benefit, after a loss of $206 million in fiscal 2012 thanks to a global draught and jump in prices that year.

Small NH coffee producer prevails over Starbucks
The Associated Press via ABC News
A small New Hampshire coffee producer that operates out of a barn has prevailed in a trademark infringement case brought by Starbucks over a blend called "Charbucks." "We're just a mom-and-pop little roastery," said Annie Clark, who with her husband, Jim, owns Black Bear Micro Roastery in Tuftonboro. They were sued in 2001 in federal district court in New York by Starbucks, which alleged Black Bear's use of the name "Charbucks" infringed, blurred and tarnished its famous trademarks.

Children: The next frontier for bottled water?
CSPNet
Many U.S. adult consumers begin their day with a cup of coffee, but as the day goes on water plays a much more important role in satisfying their beverage needs. Starting with the snack occasion that occurs between breakfast and lunch, water (both tap/filtered and bottled) represents 46 percent of drinks. Tap/filtered or bottled water is the top beverage at lunch and dinner, too, closely followed by soft drinks. Children, on the other hand, are less likely to consume water, reports NPD.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The future of water sustainability
The Huffington Post
Multinational companies have historically taken water availability for granted. But this is changing. A 2013 World Economic Forum report named water scarcity as one of the top global risks facing companies in the 21st century. So far, 93 multinational corporations have committed to the UN Global Compact's CEO Water Mandate, a public-private partnership to advance water sustainability — an exponential increase from the original six signatories in 2007. As more business leaders recognize pressures related to water availability on their supply chains and profits, they are growing more aware of the impact of irresponsible water use on "intangible" business value such as reputation, brand and customer relations.

Denver's Coda Coffee ensures that premium prices benefit bean growers
The Denver Post
Fair-trade coffee? Sustainable bean-growing? Please pardon the decaffeinated yawn. That's the norm for nearly every socially conscious importer and roaster. Coda Coffee, however, is taking the idea a step further — creating a hands-on buzz as far away as the lush Guatemalan hills and the former coca fields of Colombia. The Denver-based coffee wholesaler is not content being just another progressive coffee purveyor that pays above-market prices to its growers.
