Small-business cards offer rewards, some risk
Entrepreneur    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Small-business credit card offerings just keep multiplying. Recently, for instance, Capital One Financial Corp. launched the Spark Business credit card portfolio, which replaced its previous small business card offerings. That brought the total number of such cards issued by eight of the leading U.S. financial institutions to 52, according to Corporate Insight, a New York-based financial research company. More

Green Mountain's expiring K-Cup patents attract coffee rivals
San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sept. 16, 2012, is D Day — or at least K Day — for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. That's when it will lose the main patents on K-Cups, the coffee pods that helped make Green Mountain the largest player in the $1 billion-plus U.S. single-serve coffee market. Once the patents expire, competitors can make their own version of K-cups and threaten the prospects of a company already battling criticism from hedge fund manager David Einhorn that its market-share gains have peaked. Starbucks raises prices on some coffee drinks
The Seattle Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Starbucks raised prices on some drinks and says it lowered prices on others, in four regions including the Pacific Northwest. "As part of our regular review of pricing, some prices went up and some went down," said spokesman Alan Hilowitz. The changes are a result of "business conditions, commodities costs, occupancy costs, competitive reasons and geography," he said. It is unrelated to Starbucks deciding last week to end a $1.50 fee for whole-bean coffee purchases under a pound, the result of a consumer-rights investigation in Massachusetts. More

Green tea, taken in a capsule or drunk in a cup, may shave a few points off "bad" cholesterol readings, according to a U.S. study involving more than a thousand people. The findings, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, showed that green tea trimmed 5 to 6 points more from people's total cholesterol and "bad" LDL cholesterol levels than dummy capsules or other treatments. Catalyst study links more women leaders to greater corporate social responsibility
BLR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new study conducted by researchers at Catalyst and Harvard Business School suggests that what's good for women is good for business and also for society as a whole. According to the study, "Gender and Corporate Social Responsibility: It's a Matter of Sustainability," companies with more women at the top may be better practitioners of corporate social responsibility. Prior Catalyst research has shown that such companies also financially outperform, on average, those with fewer women in senior leadership roles. More

Sustainability: What top performing companies have in common
Eco-Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We live in amazing times. Only a very small number of years ago, any spend on "Green IT" was considered as something nice to have. A way for companies to show that they were "doing their bit," and to give them something to pad out the annual Corporate Social Responsibility report. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project's latest report, the number of companies within the S&P 500 that reported climate change policies as an integral part of their corporate strategy nearly doubled — up to 65 percent from 35 percent last year. That's a huge increase in companies that have made a board-level focus to embed carbon reduction strategies into their core business practices. More
