Seven branding tips for small businesses
IPWatchdog    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jan. 13, 2010 issue: When people think of a "brand" they often think of the Nike Swoosh or the Classic Coca Cola bottle. But it takes time and money to build a brand to that level. Small businesses just getting started do not generally have the means to advertise as a way of building their brand? More

I spy a 'stealth Starbucks'
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jan. 13, 2010 issue: There are over 15,000 Starbucks in the world but none like the one at 328 15th Avenue East in Seattle. Officially the coffee shop is called "15th Ave Coffee and Tea" but the store and a similar sister location have earned another name: "the Stealth Starbucks." At first glance the coffee shops in the mega-chain's hometown of Seattle do not even look like Starbucks. More

Coming to a lunch room near you: The future
NBC News — Washington    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Feb. 3, 2010 issue: Here's something to break up the monotony of your work day. Your daily trip to the vending machines is about to get a little more exciting. The National Automatic Merchandising Association debuted its "digi-touch" vending machines on Capitol Hill earlier this year. For those of you who work there, The Hill is reporting that those machines are set up in the Cannon Caucus Room. More

Vending machine food: Just a touch-screen away
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Feb. 17, 2010 issue: The National Automatic Merchandising Association was on Capitol Hill earlier this year, lobbying about... what, exactly? "We're obviously interested in food safety and nutrition," says Ned Monroe, NAMA's senior vice president of government affairs. "But our biggest issue right now is jobs." This is because the National Automatic Merchandising Association is the trade group for vending machines. And when unemployment gets high, Monroe says, "there are fewer workers available to buy snacks." More

San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
July 7, 2010 issue: Coca-Cola is out, and soy milk is now part of San Francisco's official city policy. Under an executive order from Mayor Gavin Newsom, Coke, Pepsi and Fanta Orange are no longer allowed in vending machines on city property, although their diet counterparts are — up to a point. Newsom's directive, issued in April but whose practical impacts were starting to be felt in July, bars calorically sweetened beverages from vending machines on city property. More

Jan. 13, 2010 issue: Ever wonder why the guy who brings in Starbucks each morning seems to be about twice as perky as those schmucks toting plastic tumblers from Dunkin' Donuts or McDonald's? The answer: Not all java is brewed equal. More

Stealth IRS changes mean millions of new tax forms
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
June 16, 2010 issue: The massive expansion of requirements for businesses to file 1099 tax forms that was hidden in the 2,409 page health reform bill took many by surprise when it came to light in May. But it's just one piece of a years-long legislative stealth campaign to create ways for the federal government to track down unreported income. The result: A blizzard of new tax forms that the Internal Revenue Service will begin rolling out in 2011. "It was actually something that we were following back under the Bush administration under the 2008 budget — we started to see these kinds of rumblings about the 'tax gap' and whether or not businesses were paying their fair share," says Tom Henschke, president of the Pennsylvania based SMC Business Councils, which was one of the first organizations to call attention to the health care amendment when it was introduced last fall. "So two administrations can claim credit for this." More

Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jan. 28, 2010 issue: Happiness is contagious, and that "contagious" quality is where design meets the market. Coca-Cola's Happiness Machine video is a perfect example of how viral happiness can be. FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jan. 20, 2010 issue: You seem different. More anxious. Pensive, perhaps. What's on your mind? A lot of people desperately want to know. Market researchers always want to get inside the heads of consumers, and they've never been more curious than they are now. In the aftermath of a wrenching recession, Americans are saving more, spending less, and rethinking many of the tenets that have governed middle-class living for the past 40 years. Vast amounts of money are at stake, as consumer-product firms try to guess how Americans will spend their scarce dollars in the future. More

The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
March 31, 2010 issue: Buried deep in the health care legislation that President Obama signed is a new requirement that will affect any American who walks into a McDonald's, Starbucks or Burger King.
