NEWS FROM NARFE

NARFE president reacts to President Obama's FY16 budget
NARFE
President Barack Obama sent Congress his fiscal year (FY) 2016 budget, which included a proposal for a 1.3 percent pay raise for federal employees in 2016. While NARFE President Richard G. Thissen issued a statement acknowledging the raise as a step in the right direction, he also cited the growing gap between public - and private-sector wages as a factor in discouraging younger workers from entering civil service as well as causing financial hardship to those already in the federal workforce. Resources for state legislative advocacy
NARFE
NARFE state legislative advocates can find a variety of tools on the websites of competing private firms. Multistate Associates provides two great services to state legislative advocates. The first is a free, full state legislative session calendar for 2015: Click here or use https://www.multistate.com/state-resources/legislative-session-deadlines. The second links to governors' recent State of the State or inaugural speeches. The competitor, Stateside Associates, is especially and rightly proud of its FactPad, where you can find resources and subscribe to various free weekly emails. If you’d prefer to watch an archived video of your governor’s address, use the C-SPAN Archive.

5 things every federal employee should know about the Obama budget
Federal News Radio
President Barack Obama has tucked a 1.3 percent pay raise for General Schedule employees and service members into his $4 trillion blueprint for fiscal 2016. At the same time, federal employees would not have to pay more towards their retirement, under the plan. Bundled into a budget that also repeals the across-the-board cuts known as sequestration, the measures mark a change from a more draconian recent past, which included three years of frozen pay followed by two years of 1 percent pay raises.

Panel recommends scrapping current military pension system
Government Executive
The generous pension system in place for military retirees with at least 20 years of service would be dismantled, in addition to several other compensation changes proposed by a nine-member panel that has studied the issue for the last year and a half. The highly anticipated recommendations from the congressionally mandated Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission range from restructuring the military retirement benefits system to moving family members and some retirees out of TRICARE and onto health insurance plans in the private sector, similar to the menu of choices civilian federal employees have under the coverage.

Study: For reducing cholesterol, corn oil better than olive oil

Aol
If you're over 50 and looking for a job, it's too easy to assume that companies all prefer younger people. That's a mistake. You have strengths, experiences and qualities that many employers want. TRAVEL

For a better airfare deal, divide and conquer
CNBC
To save on your next vacation, consider dividing your trip. Travelers often book nonstop, round-trip fares by default, but that's not always the best bargain. It increasingly pays to consider above-board alternatives, such as doubling up on one-way fares, and booking open-jaw flights that incorporate different cities.
