NARFE
In a statement released in response to Congress' action to ease the consequences of sequestration at America's airports, NARFE President Joseph A. FEDERAL BENEFITS QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Social Security spousal benefits
NARFE
Question: My spouse and I both worked under Social Security. He is currently receiving benefits, but I want to wait until age 70 so the delayed retirement credits will make my benefits higher. Someone told me that, when I reach my full retirement age of 66 later this year, I can apply for benefits as a spouse. Is this correct?

Federal Times
The Defense Department should rethink its plans for furloughs and other cutbacks to its civilian workforce, a bipartisan group of 126 House members said in a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. "It is increasingly clear that these actions are threatening to undermine mission performance and, as a result, mission readiness," the lawmakers wrote.

Obama budget would increase federal workforce
Government Executive
The size of the federal workforce would grow by 6,180 employees under President Barack Obama's proposed fiscal year 2014 budget. The departments of Homeland Security, Justice and Veterans Affairs would account for the estimated 0.3 percent increase in full-time civilian employees in executive agencies between this year and next, according to the budget blueprint. The administration would add staff to boost medical care for veterans as well as hire employees to work on cybersecurity, background checks for guns, border protection and immigration reform.

Personal Finance: Learn to be a 'squeaky wheel'
The Sacramento Bee
Got a gripe? Whether it's a faulty cell phone, a cranky washing machine or a designer dress that falls apart, inevitably something goes wrong with something you've bought. What do you do? Too many of us just give up or don't bother trying to get the store or company to resolve the problem. "We live in a buck-up-and-take-it society," said Anthony Giorgianni, associate finance editor for Consumer Reports magazine. "We're not going to plead for anything; we're just going to take it. We have a subconscious feeling that when we speak out, we're viewed as a complainer." But consumer experts say the old adage is true: Being the proverbial squeaky wheel gets results.

Why a little bit of stress may be good for you
USA Today
There are times when I think I'd be much happier if I could spend the rest of my life lounging on the sands of the Mediterranean, having someone fan me with palm fronds while feeding me superfood grapes. In other words, life would be better without any stress. Or would it?

Second acts: How (and why) boomers are embracing encore careers
LifeHealthPro
Thirty years ago, when Ron Cordes got his start in the financial services industry, he had similar goals to most people in that line of business — to serve people, help them build nest eggs for their retirement and make a little money for himself along the way. In reviewing his career path, Cordes did all right by himself. But as much as he enjoyed the work and enjoyed working with clients, something was nagging at him. "In my 40s," Cordes tells me, "I decided at 50 I wanted to re-pivot and set up a foundation to focus on global poverty."

CONSUMER TIPS

Consumer beware: Scams bloom in the spring
The Gazette
Just as flowers bloom in the spring, so do consumer scams that target homeowners. Roofing scams. Asphalt paving scams. Moving scams. "This is the time of the year that people are starting to do things outside," said Carol Odell, who's retiring next month after 14 years as CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado. "The con artists know that, so they come to your door with a deal that you cannot turn down."
