NEWS FROM NARFE

Proactively defend accurate CPI and FAIR pay
NARFE
Neither the Chained CPI nor a further federal pay freeze is in the headlines, but this is no time for NARFE members to be silent on these crucial issues. In fact, now is a great time to be proactive. NARFE's Legislative Action Center makes being proactive easy. To push back against claims that the Chained CPI is a more accurate measure for calculating cost-of-living adjustments, send your representatives our message supporting the CPI-E.

NARFE recruiters: Want an answer for the federal employee who asks what has NARFE done for me lately? Tell your would-be recruit you asked your representative to cosponsor legislation for FAIR pay and a pay raise of 3.3 percent for federal employees in 2015.

US Postal Service loss hits $1.9 billion; package volume up
Reuters
The United States Postal Service ended its second quarter with a net loss of $1.9 billion as first-class mail volume continued to tumble and lawmakers remained at odds over providing any financial relief, the agency said. The Postal Service's net loss for the fiscal second quarter ended March 31 surpassed the first quarter's loss of $354 million, but it remained flat from the year-ago quarter. It was the 20th of the last 22 quarters that the agency has posted a loss, the USPS said.

Early 401(k) withdrawals replace homes as America's piggy bank
Bloomberg via St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Premature withdrawals from retirement accounts have become America’s new piggy bank, cracked open in record amounts during lean times by people such as Cindy Cromie, who needed the money to rent a U-Haul and start a new life. Her employer, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, had outsourced Cromie's medical transcription work. Cromie said the move cut her income by as much as 60 percent, at times leaving her with minimum-wage pay.
