NARFE makes special NARFE-PAC appeal

The July issue of NARFE magazine, in the mail now, contains a special appeal for donations to NARFE-PAC, the Association's political action committee. NARFE-PAC allows NARFE members to pool their political resources on behalf of U.S. House of Representatives and Senate candidates who support federal workers and retirees. Pay freeze may go a 3rd year

Democrats in the Senate surprisingly made no attempt to include a pay raise in a key 2013 spending bill, dimming hopes that an end is in sight for the current two-year federal pay freeze. Senate Democrats are pinning their hopes on a rare scenario in which President Barack Obama could unilaterally impose a pay raise for next year. Obama has proposed a 0.5 percent raise for federal employees. More

Federal workers cite barriers to tech adoption

A new survey finds that the technology gap that separates federal workers from private-sector employees can be narrowed through increased investment and training in new technologies. More than 90 percent of the federal employee respondents said they shop and bank online, 78 percent use social media and 68 percent use smartphone apps. "We think these results clearly show that federal employees are excited and ready to bring the technologies they use in their personal lives to work," said a Google spokesman. More

Supreme Court: Fired federal workers can't sue

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that federal employees cannot sue in the courts for dismissal from their jobs for failing to comply with a law. The decision stemmed from a suit filed by Michael B. Elgin, who had been dismissed from a Civil Service job at the U.S. Department of Treasury for failing to register for the draft. He had argued that the Military Selective Service Act was unconstitutional because the law requires that only men register. More

Older people who take vitamin D supplements along with calcium may live longer than others, according to a new review of previous studies. The researchers looked at data regarding the vitamin D intake of more than 70,000 adults in their 60s and 70s. They found that people who took vitamin D, along with calcium supplements, were 9 percent less likely to die over a three-year period, compared with people who took neither supplement. More
