Long-term care and Medicare
NARFE
Question: I'm writing to you on behalf of a friend whose father is age 92 and a retired federal employee. He and his wife survive only on his federal retirement and are currently residing in an assisted-living facility. The facility they are in is inadequate for his needs. Any assistance that you can provide with respect to obtaining Medicare benefits for long-term care would be greatly appreciated.

OPM director survives congressional inquisition, for now
The Washington Post
Battered, bruised and sometimes bullied, Katherine Archuleta remains standing, or at least sitting in the director's chair after a congressional hearing marathon into her agency's massive cyber breakdown. The cyber theft of personal information belonging to more than 4 million current and former federal employees left them worried and members of Congress outraged at an Office of Personnel Management that has experienced a cascading series of embarrassing failures.

OPM remains silent on families of feds caught up in data breach
Federal News Radio
The Office of Personnel Management has extended credit monitoring and identity-theft protection to just a fraction of the victims of the recent breaches on its personnel databases. Many more — including federal employees' family members and contractors — are wondering if and when they'll be offered the same treatment. "Contractors are hoping for OPM guidance," said Alan Chvotkin, executive vice president of the Professional Services Council. "They don't want to wait forever."

It may soon be easier to fire any VA employee, not just top execs
Government Executive
A House panel approved legislation June 25 that would make it easier to fire employees at the Veterans Affairs Department. The 2015 VA Accountability Act, H.R. 1994, sponsored by House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., would give the VA secretary much more flexibility to fire corrupt or poor-performing employees, not just top officials.

Wealthier baby boomers shun homeownership
CNBC
The U.S. homeownership rate is at the lowest level in 25 years and is widely expected to go even lower. That's not just the result of younger Americans struggling to make ends meet to save for a down payment on a home. It is increasingly the result of middle-aged, higher income Americans choosing to rent.

Dynamic duos: How to get more nutrition by pairing foods
NPR
What are the makings of a great salad? You need fresh greens, of course, and then a layer of colorful vegetables like tomatoes and carrots. That's a good start. But to help the body absorb more of the nutrients packed into this medley, you may want to add something else: a cooked egg. A small study published in May in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concludes that adding eggs to salads makes it easier to absorb the carotenoids in the raw vegetables.
