NEWS FROM NARFE

Defending legislative and political interests at NARFE National Convention
NARFE
NARFE-PAC, NARFE's Political Action Committee, is a crucial part of our advocacy efforts. After a successful rollout at the 2012 National Convention, the NARFE-PAC Breakfast at the 2014 NARFE National Convention in Orlando, Fla., will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27. It will feature a special speaker, Aubrey Jewett, Ph.D., University of Central Florida associate professor of political science. The breakfast is a gesture of thanks to NARFE-PAC's generous and sustaining donors, and will encourage members to learn more about NARFE-PAC. To see if you qualify to attend the breakfast, see page 46 of the July narfe magazine, or contact the Legislative Department at leg@narfe.org. Space is limited, so sign up today by emailing leg@narfe.org.

Summer recess no vacation for legislators
NARFE
A recent survey of congressional district directors offers advice on conducting successful meetings. Many event or meeting requests coming to Congress are incomplete or don't connect the opportunity to a pending legislative issue. Invitations that are clear about the group's intentions, detailed on the logistics and flexible on the timing will not only impress the office, they'll actually translate into a visit by a member of Congress. Need help getting meetings set up for the August recess? Visit the Protect America's Heartbeat Toolkits page or email the Legislative Department at leg@narfe.org.

FEDERAL BENEFITS QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Medicare coverage
NARFE
Question: I have several questions on Medicare coverage. If I enroll in Medicare Part B, can I cancel Part B coverage at any time? Is Medicare automatically cancelled if I cease being a resident of the United States, and can I restart Medicare if I return to the United States to again become a resident? Do Medicare Parts A and B pay medical costs incurred outside of the United States if I travel for less than one month? Do my Part B premiums reduce the amount of my Social Security payment that is taxable?

1 percent pay raise becomes more likely for 2015
FedSmith.com
The House passed the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act of 2015 (H.R. 5016), which provides the historical legislative vehicle for adjustments to federal employee pay scales. The bill does not include a federal pay raise for 2015, but does not preclude one, deferring the decision to President Barack Obama.

Gosar, R-Ariz., to an appropriations bill covering the agency. The provision affects the Senior Executive Service, a cadre of mainly career officials a level below presidential appointees. The Senate is considering a similar bill.

FINANCES

Are you afraid of outliving your money?
Government Executive
Tammy Flanagan writes, "One of the concerns I hear in my seminars over and over again is not having enough money to live on in retirement. During the first part of my seminars, we discuss the value of the government retirement benefit under either the Civil Service Retirement System or the Federal Employees Retirement System, and then most people feel somewhat better — especially the people who didn't know they had a government retirement benefit."
