In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which left unprecedented flooding in Texas and Louisiana, NARFE’s disaster funds are bringing the federal community together to support those in need of disaster assistance. NARFE partners with the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) to provide emergency grants and loans to NARFE members affected by a declared natural disaster through the NARFE-FEEA Disaster Fund. If you are need of support, NARFE disaster funds in the form of cash grants ($500 maximum grant per household) are available to all NARFE members in good standing who have been injured, incurred property damage or have other needs during and after a declared natural disaster. NARFE contributions are kept separate from FEEA’s own emergency assistance fund and are disbursed to NARFE members whose applications are approved.

Each August, NARFE's Grassroots Advocacy Month seems to come and go quicker! While NARFE's Legislative Department can't slow the pace of these final days of summer, we ask you to take advantage of opportunities to connect with your legislators before they return to Washington, DC, in September. We need all NARFE members to take part in this final push to get NARFE's legislative priorities in front of legislators. Are you unsure of how to take action? Follow the Advocacy Hopscotch Worksheet to determine the steps to take to make your voice heard. Thank you to everyone who has taken action in August. We challenge you to continue the drum beat of advocacy through the end of NARFE's Grassroots Advocacy Month. Share your advocacy activity with NARFE by completing the Congressional Meeting or Event Feedback Form on NARFE's Legislative Action Center!

NARFE is a partner with the “Uphold the Oath” campaign which celebrates you, America’s federal civil servants. #UpholdTheOath is a simple but powerful way for you to publicly reaffirm your commitment to the ideals listed in the oath of office. Simply record a video of yourself reciting the oath and upload it to www.upholdtheoath.org. That’s it! For years, America’s civil service has come under attack through baseless allegations that question the relevance of their work to the American people’s daily lives. The #UpholdTheOath campaign is meant to present a positive, patriotic voice to counter those misperceptions. We hope you will consider participating in this special project.

Retirees and their dependents who track the annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for civil servants, military and Social Security retirees are often confused by the process. If the food they buy, the gasoline they burn and the medicine they need keep getting more expensive, it stands to reason that they should get a January COLA that would help them keep pace with inflation. But tracking the COLA isn’t as easy as it might appear.

The Office of Personnel Management announced it is delaying the start of the federal government’s annual charity fundraising drive until October 2, along with a number of other changes. In past years, the Combined Federal Campaign has opened at the beginning of September. The guidance, released this month by acting OPM Director Kathleen McGettigan, does not shorten the campaign’s length, as it extends the deadline by one month compared with previous years until January 12, 2018.

Tammy Flanagan writes, "Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be exploring a topic of perennial interest — picking the best date to retire. But before I do that, I thought it would be worth taking a quick look back at the subject of deciding whether and when to leave federal government."
