NEWS FROM NARFE

Deadlines, brinksmanship, bickering: Stew of uncertainty
NARFE
Each and every NARFE member should be concerned about a switch to the Chained CPI to determine annual COLAs, whether as part of a grand bargain on the deficit or in the high-stakes battle to avoid a government shutdown or worse, a default. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' release of August consumer price indices demonstrates that the Chained CPI would mean a smaller inflation adjustment. The Obama administration's budget submission proposed the switch in non-means-tested programs, and 104 representatives have voted for a budget resolution incorporating the Chained CPI (listed here). With this information, and the growing risk of the Chained CPI being used to offset other budget concerns, we urge you to join the 16,421 activists who have sent our letter in opposition to changing the COLA formula to both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. Reach the letter template by clicking here or using: http://capwiz.com/narfe/issues/alert/?alertid=62245936.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a new report released recently that revenue collected by the IRS fell 9 percent in fiscal 2012 to 50.2 billion — down from $55.2 billion in fiscal 2011.
