NEWS FROM NARFE

NARFE pleased with passage of back-pay bill
NARFE
Following passage of legislation in the House granting furloughed federal employees back pay, NARFE President Joseph A. Beaudoin said, "now it is time to reopen the government." The House unanimously passed the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, H.R. 3223, on Saturday, Oct. 5.

"NARFE is pleased that the House was able to come together to pass this bill, which will help to minimize the collateral damage inflicted on federal workers during the shutdown," Beaudoin said. "Many of these employees have already endured unpaid furloughs due to sequestration and over 1,000 days of a federal pay freeze. They do not need to face an indefinite period without pay, as well. That said, now it is time to reopen the government. Federal employees are proud of the work they do on behalf of this country. Congress must let them continue to do it."

Responders to Capitol incident working without pay
Federal Times
When a woman police believe to be 34-year-old Miriam Carey rammed her car into the security barrier at the White House and then again near the Capitol building, it was Capitol Police and Secret Service officers who responded. But while law enforcement officers shot and killed the suspect, protected members of Congress and secured the area, they were not getting paid for their work because of the ongoing government shutdown.

DOD to bring back most employees from shutdown furlough
Federal News Radio
Most of the Defense Department workforce that was sent home at the beginning of the government shutdown will be back on the job this week, the Pentagon said. The decision came after DoD and Justice Department lawyers spent five days working to develop a legal interpretation of a last-minute law Congress passed just before the shutdown began. The Pay Our Military Act ensured that uniformed service members would be paid during a shutdown, but also provided for pay to civilians and contractors who "are providing support to members of the armed forces."

Is it healthy for seniors to be a little overweight?
LiveScience via Yahoo
Is carrying a few extra pounds into your senior years healthy? Advice has been mixed. Now, two studies published this month attempt to better define the ideal weight for fitness and longevity for adults over age 60. The gist is that you don't need to worry about being slightly overweight, as long as that extra weight is maintained at a consistent level. However, being very overweight is detrimental to health, and exercising to lose body fat and to gain muscle mass is always beneficial.
