NEWS FROM NARFE

Budget conference — tell Congress 'Enough is Enough'
NARFE
Oct. 30 will be the first meeting of the House-Senate conference committee on the budget resolution. The group is tasked with reconciling very different House and Senate budget proposals and could consider a broad range of options aimed at reducing budget deficits, including a switch to the Chained CPI for calculating cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to federal annuities and Social Security benefits, an increase in retirement contributions for federal employees, and an extension of the pay freeze.

President Beaudoin urges each NARFE member to tell Congress "Enough is Enough" by sending NARFE's message to "the members of Congress over whom we hold some sway — our own congressional delegation. Contacted in sufficient numbers, these members will speak on our behalf to those negotiating some compromise between the House and Senate budget resolutions." The NARFE Legislative Action Center's "Enough is Enough" message template is an easy, yet powerful, tool to make your views known to your congressional delegation. We need a record level of participation because the stakes are very high and the deadline so near.

FEDERAL UPDATE

Wary federal workers look to next budget talks with caution
The Washington Post via Daily Herald
On Day 1 of the partial government shutdown, President Barack Obama let federal employees know he was in their corner. The "political climate," he wrote in an Oct. 1 letter to them, "too often in recent years, has treated you like a punching bag. You have endured three years of a federal pay freeze, harmful sequester cuts, and now, a shutdown of our government." Having survived the 16-day shutdown, federal workers are getting ready for the next round in the congressional budget fight. But this time they're keeping a wary eye on their cornerman, even as they try to block the big blows from Republicans across the ring.

Bill would open FEHBP to non-feds
Federal Times
All Americans could sign up for the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program under a bipartisan bill introduced recently by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif. Under the bill, nonfederal enrollees would not get the same government subsidy enjoyed by federal workers and retirees that covers the bulk of the premium expense, Issa spokesman Ali Ahmad said in an interview. Private companies, however, could offer help as an employee benefit, he said.
