Register now for NARFE's 2015 Legislative Training Conference

Plan to be a part of one of our Association's most exciting and important events, NARFE's 2015 Legislative Training Conference, March 14-17, at the Renaissance Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. The conference offers NARFE leaders and grass-roots activists the opportunity to learn from NARFE Legislative Department staff, hear from national speakers and network with fellow NARFE advocates. Attendees will go to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and staff on the conference's final day. First-time participants are especially encouraged to come and hone their advocacy skills. The deadline to register with both NARFE and the hotel is Feb. 3. A conference registration form is available on p. 11 of the November issue of narfe magazine, or you can register online at www.narfe.org. There are only 300 spots available, so don't wait, register now!

Phased retirement officially starts for feds, but don't count on it

The long-awaited authority for federal workers to phase into retirement officially began Nov. 6, but it is still unclear how soon, how widely and under what conditions agencies will give their employees that opportunity. The government now can accept applications for the hybrid arrangement designed to allow retirement-eligible employees to cut back while keeping a hand in their work.

Issa, Ryan look to FERS reform

Facing a GOP-controlled Senate and a record Republican majority in the House, congressional leaders have turned their attention to budget issues that would raise federal employees' contributions toward retirement. In a letter sent to the Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf, Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Paul Ryan, R-Wis., asked for an "examination of the budgetary impact of different options for reforming FERS "examination of the budgetary impact of different options for reforming FERS [Federal Employee Retirement System]."

U.S. Postal Service says data breach hits employees, call center

The U.S. Postal Service was the victim of a cyberattack that may have compromised the personal information of more than 800,000 employees as well as data on customers who contacted its call center from January through mid-August. The employee information possibly accessed includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, beginning and end dates of employment, and emergency contact information, the Postal Service said in a recent statement

Unscrupulous debt collectors are seniors' top financial peeve

When it comes to financial shenanigans, the top targets of senior citizens' complaints in this country are debt collectors, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported Wednesday. Seniors commonly report being hounded and threatened by debt collectors — and about half of those reported incidents involved debts they didn't incur.
