FEDERAL BENEFITS QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Court-ordered benefit
NARFE
Question: I have been divorced from my first wife for seven years and have since remarried. My first wife will get part of my retirement as part of our divorce decree. If she remarries before she turns age 55, would she lose her share of my retirement?

FEDERAL UPDATE

At many agencies, fears of an exodus
Federal Times
Across the federal government, only one out of every seven full-time employees is currently eligible to retire. But that overall 14 percent ratio masks gaping disparities across agency and organizational lines. At one NASA organization — the Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley — the proportion of retirement-eligible employees stands at almost 28 percent, according to Office of Personnel Management statistics released at Federal Times' request.

Why increasing feds' retirement contributions may not help cut the deficit
Federal News Radio
Requiring federal employees to contribute more of their salary toward retirement is rumored to be among the proposals being considered by the House-Senate budget conference committee as a partial alternative to the sequestration budget cuts. The proposal, which the Congressional Budget Office has concluded would bring in nearly $20 billion in increased federal revenues over 10 years, has drawn criticism from federal-employee unions. But at least one think tank, known for its hawkish stance on reducing the deficit, says the proposal could end up not saving the government a dime.

FINANCES

Do this before lending cash to family
MarketWatch
Ah, the holidays. Time for gathering with family members — and getting hit up for loans. Yes, that's a bit harsh. But older adults — those approaching retirement and those already retired — are frequently in better financial shape than younger family members and are better able to lend a hand. Consider: Almost one in four surveyed workers age 55-plus have $250,000 or more in savings and investments (not including the value of their homes), according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. If a family member asks for a loan, there are precautions you should take before opening your wallet.

HEALTH

Staying active all day linked to healthy aging
Reuters
A generally active life, even without regular exercise sessions, was tied to better heart health and greater longevity in a study of older Swedes. Based on nearly 3,900 men and women over age 60 in Stockholm, the study adds to evidence suggesting that just sitting around may be actively harmful, researchers say.

TRAVEL

Road trip on Route 66, Americana
The Huffington Post
Sidonie Sawyer writes, "The original and legendary blue and red U.S. Route 66 signs have now faded to pink and dust, but let's not be blue about it, for the lavender Laundromats and rusting green tractors can still be spotted along the way. Running from Chicago to Los Angeles, the mother-of-all roads cut through half of the country when nothing else did. The nostalgia here is intense."
