Like a slow crescendo, the Music City Center is gradually taking shape. The $585 million convention center is about 40 percent complete, with workers continuing to assemble the 1.2 million-square-foot structure's steel and concrete skeleton. More than 100 people, including several elected state and local officials, gathered at Nashville International Airport July 12 to celebrate completion of the terminal's latest renovation project and rename the building in Robert C.H. Mathews Jr.'s honor. Mathews, who died in 2008 at age 80, served on the Metro Nashville Airport Authority from 1979-2001. He was chairman of the board, which manages Nashville International and John C. Tune airports, for 19 of those years. The Corporation for Travel Promotion plans to stage a "coming-out party" at the World Travel Market in London in November, when it will unveil a brand identity and sketch out the theme for a global marketing campaign. CEO Jim Evans said the campaign itself is targeted to be launched at the ITB Berlin travel show in March. He said he expects the CTP will have $150 million in industry and government matching funds for marketing during its first year. More

Do you ever talk to hotel staffers after you check-in with a front desk clerk? Research firm J.D. Power and Associates posed that question to 61,300 travelers for its just-released, 15th annual study of hotel guest satisfaction. A whopping 38 percent said they, in fact, do stop interacting with hotel staff after they leave the check-in desk. This is a stat worth watching — and you can bet hotel owners will place a high priority in tracking it, too. It will be particularly important to watch as hotels roll out more technology — such as hotel check-in kiosks — that have the potential to reduce human interaction, and also as travel rebounds, typically a time when hotels expand their payroll.
