C&D needed for public safety after earthquake in New Zealand

The earthquake of Feb. 22 has generated large volumes of construction and demolition waste in Christchurch, New Zealand, and operational debris and waste management plans for the short to midterm handling and disposal of this material are currently being developed, National Controller John Hamilton said. Demolition of buildings is to occur only when public safety is an immediate risk during this immediate response phase, Hamilton said. More

Global construction will outpace GDP growth over the next 10 years, with China and India accounting for 38 percent of the $4.8 trillion increase in output by 2020, PwC said. After overtaking the U.S. as the biggest construction market in 2010, China's construction sector will more than double in size to $2.5 trillion by 2020, accounting for a fifth of world construction, PwC said, citing a report it sponsored. Nonresidential building investment falls in Calgary, Canada

Investment in nonresidential building construction fell by 10.6 percent last year in the Calgary, Canada, census metropolitan area. Investment dropped to $3.9 billion from $4.3 billion in 2009, said Statistics Canada. The largest decline was in the industrial sector where it fell from $131.4 million in 2009 to $81 million in 2010. More
