The nation's first university textbook on the subject of the demolition process, "Demolition: Practices, Technology, and Management," is now available for reading on all e-book readers, including Kindle, Nook and iPad devices. "Since its publication in a print format in 2010, sales have been brisk," said Michael R. The National Solid Wastes Management Association and the Construction Materials Recycling Association have teamed up to develop viable, in-use construction and demolition wood fuel specifications. The specifications are based on industry experience, permit requirements for boilers using C&D wood as a fuel stock and regulatory requirements governing the use of this material. More

Two weeks after the storm, the Joplin Tornado Citizen Checks page on Facebook has about 6,500 "likes" and is still growing every day. Stories of joyful reunions now mix with those mourning the loss of loved ones, along with messages about supplies, prayers and support. The page was one of dozens that sprouted up in the immediate aftermath and quickly became the fastest way to get information, as survivors and their relatives relied on social media as they might once have leaned on the Red Cross or their local relief agencies. "The biggest part of using social media during a disaster is that it's not about the government helping the public; it's about the public helping themselves," said Kim Stephens, a senior associate at ABT Associates and veteran emergency management expert. Experts: Credit stalls small-business hiring

The official release of May jobs numbers by the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest small businesses need more access to credit if they are expected to contribute to job hiring and continue to be hurt by gas prices. According to preliminary results from the National Federation of Independent Business' monthly economic survey (to be released June 14), fewer small businesses plan to increase employment, while slightly more plan to reduce their work force in the next three months. Construction workers have most traumatic head injuries

The construction industry has the highest number of traumatic brain injuries out of all other sectors of the U.S. workforce, according to a new study. And University of California, San Diego, researchers say the highest rates of serious head injuries happen in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries. The high numbers of traumatic brain injuries may be attributed to the "graying" of the American workforce, the researchers said in a statement. More
