NDA board approves Association Education Initiative and membership survey
NDA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The board of directors of the NDA approved the proposed Association Education Initiative as part of a broad review of the organization's strategic plan when it met June 16 at the Lodge in Sonoma in Sonoma, Calif.

The NDA plans to develop a comprehensive educational and training program to be offered to all levels of our industry. This multimedia education effort will include health and safety training, management courses and specialized webinars. The board approved a major element of this effort, a program to develop a body of knowledge for the demolition process, which will be used as the base for course development for the industry around the world. It will also be evaluating expansion of its existing educational and training offers, many of which have been part of the NDA's Annual Demolition Academy. Other elements of the proposed program include webinars to educate the membership about a variety of special issues such as legal concerns for the demolition contractors, basic industrial hygiene, building a disaster response capability and the like. The association is also considering the development of management courses in financial management for demolition companies, job site personnel management, demolition estimating and similar management education programs.

The first element of this program is how to see exactly what educational and training offerings the membership of the NDA is interested in and would use. The association will be conducting an in-depth survey of the NDA's Regular Members to determine their training and education needs, the price of these services and the delivery systems that best meet their needs. The results of this important survey will guide the board as it implements the various elements of the NDA's Education Initiative.

NDA President Don Rachel encourages all NDA members to participate in this survey. It is vitally important for the board of directors to understand the needs of the industry. Look for this survey in July or August. It will be forwarded to each Regular Member online and via regular USPS mail. Please take the time to provide the board with your thoughts on this valuable member service that is sure to benefit you and your company.

Applications for the NDA's 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards will be mailed out to every association member early in July. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients. These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same.

This year's awards will be presented by Environment Committee Chairman Chris Godek of New England Yankee Construction of Milford, Conn., March 25, immediately following President Don Rachel's welcoming address at the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego. Award winners receive two awards, one for their own firm and one to present to the client they did the work for. The NDA's Environment Committee established this program to enlighten our customers, the construction community and the general public to the major role the industry plays in enhancing the quality of life in the towns and cities where we work. Look for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards application forms soon. The applications will also be available online on NDA's website.

One of the NDA's largest public relations efforts every year is the opportunity for our members to participate in a special Demolition Insert in McGraw-Hill's Engineering-New Record magazine, the construction industry's premier new publication. Within the framework of the association's extensive public relations program, ENR's Demolition Insert is an excellent opportunity to Brand the NDA as the leading trade organization for the demolition process in the world. It is also part of the association's major branding effort and guides the industry's markets to the NDA as the source of information about demolition, recycling, salvage, environmental services and safe work practice.

All NDA members are encouraged to participate in this year's ENR Demolition Insert, which will appear in the Nov. 26 issue of ENR. For more information, contact Mike Taylor at NDA Headquarters.

Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The 2012 London Olympics could very well be the most sustainable Summer Games on record. Critics may be quick to highlight such sponsors as BP and Dow Chemical, and the creation of the world's largest McDonald's, not to mention strange moments such as London Mayor Boris Johnson's move to manipulate pollution levels using dodgy chemicals. Nevertheless, no Olympic organizers have worked harder to make this massive event more environmentally responsible than London 2012. More

The building, dubbed by locals the "Ecomonster," had been an eyesore for more than 20 years. More

Bits of buildings: How is computing changing the architect's job?
MIT News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 1957, when local officials in Sydney, Australia, were judging entries in a competition to design their new opera house, they settled on an unusual plan by a Danish architect, Jorn Utzon. In Utzon's vision, the building would feature a series of curving segments, evoking the billowing sails of a ship, an apparent homage to Sydney's harbor and maritime orientation. However, no one was certain if Utzon's design was structurally possible. More
