Think of Asbury Park as the comeback kid: A Jersey shore destination made massively popular by Bruce Springsteen's eponymous 1973 album, a string of setbacks nearly took the town out with the tide — most notably a major economic dip in the 1970s and '80s, and Superstorm Sandy's damage of nearly 60,000 square miles of the town's beachfront boardwalk in 2013 — but it's back this summer season, and with a stylish new property, The Asbury Hotel, to boot.

New Jersey has very a very old and restrictive system in place for restaurants to get a liquor license, but things could soon be changing.
Right now, the state only permits one liquor license to be issued for every 3,000 residents in a town. That shortage means that the cost for obtaining a license can be staggering — in some cases more than a million dollars.

Once again, there's a shortfall in revenue that a half-dozen Meadowlands towns were scheduled to receive from a hotel-room surcharge in the district. And several pending appeals could trim some of their payments even more, a state agency warned. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority has sent East Rutherford, Rutherford, North Arlington, Ridgefield, Kearny and Jersey City partial payments of the money they were due on May 15 from a 3 percent hotel surcharge instituted last year.

There are a lot of unique regional foods in this country, and New Jersey has more than its fair share. Food magazine Saveur recently devoted a month to the Garden State and made the argument that "New Jersey is America's most edible state, with a food culture more rich, diverse, and passionate than even big names like California and New York." But while New Jersey college students have championed monster offbeat combo sandwiches, locals like crispy fried hot dogs, and there is a huge and delicious Portuguese culinary culture, no single food screams New Jersey as loudly as Taylor ham, more generically known as pork roll.

April was another UP month for the 8 casinos in Atlantic City.
Year to date numbers from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement show revenues, or what the industry calls "gaming win," at just under $813 million. That's 4.4 percent better than 2015.
Matt Levinson, chairman of the Casino Control Commission, believes the turnaround comes thanks, in large part, to downsizing the business from 12 casinos two years ago.

For almost 86 years now I have stood on Route 9 in Bayville watching the world go by (which for a dinosaur is no time at all), the scenery changing with each new decade, the population of cars growing from a handful here and there to thousands a day driving by my little place on the highway that was not so long ago little more than an oiled dirt road.
