Two California Cities Eye Driver-Friendly Parking Laws
San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's only one thing more irritating than having to interrupt your Brazilian jazz class to feed the meter. That's racing outside, keys in hand, only to find a parking officer writing a ticket. In two California cities, that most frustrating of urban experiences may soon be obsolete. Berkeley and Oakland are both considering a true rarity: driver-friendly ordinances that would forbid parking officers from writing tickets if the driver is present. More

Parking Spaces in Switzerland Become Endangered Species
Swiss Info    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Swiss cities are some of the world's most expensive to park a car — and the trend for limiting spaces further isn't going to make them any cheaper. In a 2011 global survey, Zurich was the third-most expensive city to park in on a monthly basis, setting drivers back $822. Geneva came in eighth at $704. Both cities were also in the top 10 for daily parking rates. More

San Francisco Meters Rouse Outcry of Unfairness to Poor
The Bay Citizen via The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Marjorie Lovell, manager of Galindo Installation and Moving Services in San Francisco, works to relocate companies, but it is her business that could soon be forced to move — because of a battle over street parking spaces. The city is in the midst of an effort to manage public parking better. Spaces on Galindo's block are currently free and mostly unrestricted, but a proposal could install meters where many of her 15 employees park. More

Multi-Space Meters to Allow Credit Card and Phone Payment in Columbia, Mo.
Columbia Missourian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some motorists in Columbia, Mo., will be able to pay for downtown parking with credit cards and phones when the two multi-space meters for the city's 90-day pilot program are activated. Digital Payment Technologies installed the machines, called LUKE II stations, on Feb. 2. Signs display two-digit numbers at each affected space, which motorists then use to pay at the meter. More

LA Parking Lot Becomes Urban Oasis
The Architect's Newspaper    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What's the best place to build a wetland? How about at the site of an old bus lot in Los Angeles? It took more than $26 million and nearly three years to complete the transformation from parking lot to urban wetland. The new South Los Angeles Wetland Park doesn't just efficiently process storm water runoff, it also provides crucial community green space. More

Poll: New Yorkers Want to Keep Parking Stickers
The New York Times (blog)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New York's yellow-green sticker of parking shame may be headed for extinction, but not if New Yorkers have anything to say about it. A Quinnipiac University poll found that 60 percent of city voters want the city to continue slapping the large and extremely difficult to remove stickers on the windows of cars that violate alternate-side parking rules and force the street sweeper to make a little detour. Is Proposed Parking Lease A Good Deal for Sacramento?
KCRA-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sacramento, Calif., staff members will likely unveil by the end of the month how they plan to balance the numbers in a parking lease proposal that is intended to finance a new arena. Assistant City Manager John Dangberg said staff members are examining a number of sources that might serve to back fill an estimated $9 million of diverted parking revenues. More

'Parking Wars': Sweet Satisfaction on Life's Mean Streets
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There is such a sick, simple pleasure to A&E's "Parking Wars" — the perfect dose of schadenfreude and vicarious comeuppance. Random Philadelphians (and, in these new episodes, unlucky parkers in Detroit and Providence, R.I.) receive and then rage against the $20 to $30 tickets placed on their windshields by the artists formerly known as meter maids. A viewer softly cheers as immobilizing "boot" restraints are clamped on the wheels of repeat offenders. More
