U.S. Treasury Department agents have filed a warrant and seized $163,089 from the bank account of a Renton, Wash., pawnshop, the same business profiled last month in the KING 5 Investigation "Trail of the Gun." Ben's Loan is a longtime Renton pawnshop that is also a federally licensed firearms dealer. The IRS warrant, unsealed in federal court in Seattle, does not mention firearms sales. But it does mention cash, lots of it. More

'Structuring' cash deposits is a federal crime
National Pawnbrokers Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Federal law makes it a crime to "structure" cash transactions "for the purpose of evading the record-keeping or reporting requirements of federal anti-money laundering laws." These laws are in addition to the cash reports that pawnbrokers are required to file against customers from whom the pawnbroker receives $10,000 or more in cash at a time or in a series of transactions over a 12-month period. Pawning keeps bill collectors at bay for small businesses
U.S.News & World Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's certainly a bit of a stigma when it comes to pawnshops.Maybe it's the prevailing mental image of a seedy-looking storefront with flickering neon signs packed to the brim with everything from foosball tables to gold dental caps. Maybe it's the stereotypical shop owner who might be trying rip you off. "It's an industry that people had a perception that you dealt with crackheads or drug dealers and everything was stolen," says Les Gold, owner of Detroit-based American Jewelry and Loan, and star of the hit reality show Hardcore Pawn. "It was a dark, dingy store." More

Small businesses wonder if Supreme Court case will hurt second-hand sales
The Associated Press via The Patriot-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The unusual lawsuit — involving the resale in the United States of copyrighted works produced abroad — could raise troubling questions for all sorts of organizations. Affected could be used-book sellers, online service providers, auction houses and perhaps even museums, libraries and individuals. "All a publisher would have to do is see a book that we've offered on our website that's (foreign-made) and possibly bring a lawsuit against me," said John Schulman, co-owner of Caliban Books, a used-book seller in Oakland, Pa. He estimates about half his sales are produced abroad. More

What you may not know is that he's also the drummer in the hard-hitting local rock band SuperLast, which will celebrate the release of its newself-titled CD on Friday at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. Gun sales booming
The Decatur Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many in the firearms business say President Barack Obama has been the best thing to happen to their industry in years, and it's not because he supports gun ownership. Obama, a Democrat who won election to a second term in November, is perceived by many pro-Second Amendment activists and gun owners as a threat to private firearms ownership. In reality, the president has taken a nearly hands-off approach to domestic firearms laws. More

Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gold inched up as a drop in the U.S. unemployment rate did little to dampen expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain easy monetary policy when it meets later this week. Investors are watching progress in the U.S. fiscal talks and potential political uproar in Italy, which could jolt the market where liquidity is starting to thin as traders close books before the end of the year.
