Counterfeit bills rise for holidays
Cincinnati Enquirer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When you’re out Christmas shopping this season, it would be wise to check your change once and check it twice. That’s because some people, local retailers say, are being naughty and not very nice. Stores are seeing the usual holiday increase in counterfeit bills despite their best efforts to thwart the grinches with false greenbacks. More

Gun sales in 2012 set record, FBI data indicates
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The gun business in the United States is thriving and the tragic events in Newtown, Conn. may likely do little to quell Americans' spending on munitions. The Federal Bureau of Investigation recorded more than 16.8 million background checks for gun purchases in 2012, the highest number since the FBI began publishing the data in 1998. A record number of requests for background checks for gun buyers went through on Black Friday in November, the FBI reported at the time, in part because of fears that President Barack Obama and other lawmakers would tighten gun control laws. Albany Times Union    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Albany County Executive Dan McCoy in New York vetoed for the second time legislation that would ratchet up regulation on stores dealing in precious metals and secondhand goods. 'Pawn Stars' at center of legal tempest with Hollywood agents
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How big are the stars of "Pawn Stars"? Big enough for Hollywood agents to fight over them. Los Angeles talent agency Venture IAB filed a lawsuit claiming that it guided the careers of Rick Harrison and other workers at the Las Vegas pawn shop featured in the History reality hit. But Harrison, his father ("The Old Man"), his son ("Big Hoss") and staffer Austin Russell ("Chumlee") were later poached by a bigger firm, United Talent Agency. More

Out of the Shadows
Financial Times via CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Indian gold can look a little cheap because it's so intensely yellow," says Pamela Baffour-Djan, holding up some tinny-looking bangles, "but that's actually because it's at least 22 carats," close to pure. She disappears into a storage vault and returns with a jaw-dropping haul of high-end booty, all of which has been left as security for loans at Borro, the online pawnbrokers. Out comes a Cartier diamond and pearl necklace, apparently worth 50,000. More

Paroled South Philadelphia mobster's sister seeks to open pawnshop, finds opposition
Philadelphia Inquirer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It was a South Philly version of the elephant in the room: the convicted mobster at the community zoning meeting. Dressed in a blue Adidas track suit and sitting near the back of the school auditorium, Philip Narducci, 50, had bulked up in the last two and a half decades in federal prison. But his presence has nonetheless been felt as his sister, Susan Baldino, attempts to open a pawnshop and check-cashing business. More
