Justice Department looks for ways to recruit forensic pathologists

Television crime dramas may draw big audiences, but they don't seem to work as a recruiting tool for forensic pathologists. A draft report by a Justice Department scientific working group laments the nation's shortage of these specialists who perform autopsies to determine the cause of death, whether from disease or foul play. It also suggests several ways — including financial incentives — to persuade medical students to choose pathology over other specialties. More

Scientists have identified 10 new regions of DNA linked to type 2 diabetes, bringing the total number of genes and gene regions associated with the disease to more than 60. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin and does not respond effectively to the insulin it does produce. The international team of researchers said their findings may help experts develop treatments for the condition. More

A mechanical device as small as a grain of rice is about to replace the mice. Instead of using laboratory mice to test new drug therapies, scientists will put human cells into microfabricated bioreactors that mimic how organs respond to experimental medicines. May Chin, NSH's most recent Lee Luna award winner and section head of Surrey Memorial Hospital's histopathology lab, wrote about her June trip to Costa Rica: "Thank you to NSH for awarding me the Lee Luna Foreign Travel Scholarship sponsored generously by Leica Microsystems. This scholarship has allowed me to go to San Jose, Costa Rica to present 4 lectures at the First Central American Histology Symposium and Convention. The symposium was hosted by the Medical School of Costa Rica and San Juan De Dios Hospital on June 15 and June 16. There were eight classes with an emphasis on general histology, IHC (beginner to intermediate level) and lab certification/inspections." More

Scientists use light to 'tag and track' genetic processes

In a new study, UT Dallas researchers outline how they used fluorescent molecules to "tag" DNA and monitor a process called DNA looping, a natural biological mechanism involved in rearranging genetic material in some types of cells.
