U.S. researchers say they will redouble their efforts to create human sperm from stem cells following the success of a Japanese study involving mice. A Kyoto University team used mice stem cells to create eggs, which were fertilized to produce baby mice. Dr. Renee Pera, of Stanford University in California, aims to create human sperm to use for reproduction within two years, and eggs within five years. More

Prostate cancer genetic 'signatures' could predict who will have aggressive tumors

Scientists have found two distinct genetic "signatures" for prostate cancer that may help doctors predict which patients have aggressive tumors, and designed experimental blood tests to read those genetic signs like barcodes. The teams, whose work was published in the Lancet Oncology journal, believe tests developed from the signatures could eventually be used to tell which patients need immediate treatment. More

Gene therapy gets the blue light

U.S. researchers have developed a system, triggered by blue light, that can seek out and turn on or off any desired gene, which could be useful for research in biotechnology and in medicine. This is the first time specific sections of DNA have been turned on and off. The researchers could control where and when a gene was turned on, and how quickly this happened. They also report tuning the level of gene expression using the intensity of the light in their paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. More

Taking enough omega-3 fatty acid supplements to change the balance of oils in the diet could slow a key biological process linked to aging, new research suggests. The study showed that most overweight but healthy middle-age and older adults who took omega-3 supplements for four months altered a ratio of their fatty acid consumption in a way that helped preserve tiny segments of DNA in their white blood cells. These segments, called telomeres, are known to shorten over time in many types of cells as a consequence of aging. More
