But a discovery by a team led by Mingjun Zhang, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, could give the fungus's life more purpose — as a cancer fighter. Zhang and his team have discovered that nanoparticles produced by A. oligospora hold promise for stimulating the immune system and killing tumors. More

Researchers have found that stem cell cultures infused with growth factors could be used to repair damaged heart tissue without the threat of patient rejection. Ren-Ke Li and team say that their discovery transforms aged stem cells into cells that function like much younger ones. These may one day enable scientists to grow cardiac patches for diseased or damaged hearts from a patient's own stem cells, no matter how old they are, while avoiding the risk for rejection. More

Clinical trial targets advanced prostate cancer

Select patients with advanced prostate cancer may benefit from a Georgia Health Sciences University Cancer Center clinical trial that looks to improve survival rates of the FDA-approved prostate cancer drug Provenge. The trial, led by GHSU Cancer Center Director Samir N. Khleif, is the first in the country to investigate prostate cancer treatment combining Provenge with two other cancer-fighting drugs, CT-011 and cyclophosphamide. As the first FDA-approved immunotherapy treatment for prostate cancer, Provenge has been found to extend life expectancy of certain men with advanced prostate cancer by nearly 20 percent. More

World's smallest wrench controls tiny particles

This virtual tool can precisely twist and turn the tiniest of particles, from living cells and DNA to microscopic motors and dynamos used in biological and physical research. The court granted cert in a case challenging patents on genes associated with increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, report The New York Times, Bloomberg News and SCOTUSblog. At issue is whether isolated genes are "human-made inventions" that can be patented, or "products of nature" that may not be patented, the Times explains. More

A new method for generating stem cells from mature cells promises to boost stem cell production in the laboratory, helping to remove a barrier to regenerative medicine therapies that would replace damaged or unhealthy body tissues. Therefore the large interest in mechanochemistry: an energy-efficient alternative that avoids using bulk solvents and uses high-frequency milling to drive reactions. Milling is achieved by the intense impact of steel balls in a rapidly moving jar, which hinders the direct observation of underlying chemistry. Scientists have now for the first time studied a milling reaction in real time, using highly penetrating X-rays to observe the surprisingly rapid transformations as the mill mixes, grinds and transforms simple ingredients into a complex product. This study opens new opportunities in green chemistry and environmentally friendly synthesis. More
