11th NSPS Student Competition points to bright future for surveying profession

An impressive project submitted by a team from Troy University in Troy, Ala., on the theme "Surveying Applications in Geographic Information Systems" won first place in the 11th Annual NSPS Student Competition. The award presentation was held in conjunction with the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon conference in Portland, Ore., on March 13. More

A study published in Nature Climate Change claimed that tropical vegetation contains 21 percent more carbon than previous studies had suggested. Using a combination of remote sensing and field data, scientists from Woods Hole Research Center, Boston University and the University of Maryland were able to produce the first "wall-to-wall" map (500m x 500m spatial resolution) of carbon storage in forests, shrublands and savannas in the tropics of Africa, Asia and South America. More

Rethink Wireless reports that with LightSquared on hold and Dish waiting for approval, Clearwire is poised to position itself as the most viable alternative to the two big wireless carriers, even though its new network will not be operational until next year. The article, as well as one in Wireless Week, quotes Clearwire CFO Hope Cochran on the company's plans: "People are looking for that capacity, and there's not that many places to go," Cochran said at the Goldman Sachs TMT Leveraged Finance conference in New York City.

The Ordnance Survey's new professional accreditation program aims to create a specialist network of geographic information experts who will work with the U.K. national mapping agency in supporting and providing technical advice to government, commercial and international customers. This move recognizes that the global use of GI and the important role that accurate mapping data can play in supporting economies, governments, commercial organizations and individuals are at an all time high. The OS data is being used extensively across the private and public sector to drive efficiencies and underpin decision making. In addition, GI is being used by new audiences, and the challenge for OS and the industry is how best to foster new collaboration between "non-traditional" partners to drive the geospatial innovation agenda forward. More
