ACSM/NSPS merger plan

A plan for merging ACSM and NSPS into one organization was approved in April by representatives of AAGS, GLIS and NSPS. The proposed merger plan has been posted at both the NSPS and ACSM websites and can also be read in its entirety here. A letter to NSPS members describing the voting process regarding this plan has been posted as well.

Karl Rove, former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush, penned an op-ed for Politico in support of LightSquared. It argues that the Obama administration has prevented the company from "spending billions to create jobs and improve America's infrastructure." He says that GPS devices are "poaching," saying that after a decade of regulatory approvals, the Obama administration reversed itself because of GPS interference caused "because these devices are listening into the part of the spectrum licensed to LightSquared." Karl Rove is now working for LightSquared as a paid consultant, the company confirmed to POLITICO on Tuesday.

The Technical Committee for the third European LiDAR Mapping Forum invites all interested parties to submit their abstracts online by July. The Forum will take place in Salzburg, Austria, Dec. 4-5.

Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the ELMF Technical Committee, and the final program will be announced by Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald, at the beginning of September.

The space-based technology that lets GPS-equipped motorists constantly update their precise location will undergo a major test of its ability to rapidly pinpoint the location and magnitude of strong earthquakes across the western United States, according to NASA. China said it has successfully launched two navigation satellites, the 12th and 13th additions to its fast-expanding home-grown navigation and positioning satellite network that will soon end Chinese dependence on the United States-run Global Positioning System. The two satellites were launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest Sichuan province, carried on a Long March-3B rocket. More
