NSPS' Curt Sumner to Dedicate Final Point for Thoreau During SHS’ 2017 Surveyors Rendezvous

The mention Henry David Thoreau brings to mind many things: author, naturalist, craftsman… but SURVEYOR?? Thoreau’s surveys of Walden Pond and many other parcels in the Concord, Massachusetts area will be studied in-depth at this year’s annual Surveyors Rendezvous, presented by the Surveyors Historical Society. Special displays of original plats, field notes and other artifacts, combined with fascinating classroom sessions and local tours highlight this once-in-a-lifetime event for land surveyors.

As part of the Rendezvous, Curt Sumner, Executive Director of NSPS, will be on hand Thursday, September 14 in Concord’s Sleepy Hollow Cemetery to dedicate a “Final Point” at the site of Thoreau’s grave. This special recognition honoring Thoreau’s contributions to the science and art of land surveying is sponsored by the Surveyors Historical Society and NSPS.

The Rendezvous will be held September 13 - 16, 2017 in Concord, Massachusetts. Detailed information and registration materials can be found at the SHS website - www.surveyorshistoricalsociety.com. The NSPS Final Point program offers an opportunity to honor a surveyor at their resting place. A partnership between NSPS and Berntsen International, markers are solid 4” diameter bronze and beautifully engraved with the name of the surveyor, and latitude and longitude of his/her final resting place. For every marker purchased, donations are made to the NSPS Foundation and the Berntsen/NSPS Scholarship Fund. To learn more about the Final Point project, visit www.nsps.us.com/?page=FinalPoint.
