Kathleen Panek's family has a strong military background. "My uncles were in World War II," Panek said. "One didn't return, one came back mangled. He had two sons. One retired from the Army. The other retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force." Last year, when Veteran's Day rolled around, Panek and the Mountainstate Association of Bed & Breakfasts offered a promotion to honor those who, she said, paid for our freedom. More

U.S. hotel room prices are expected to drop a total of 8.8 percent in 2009 compared to 2008 and will continue creeping down in 2010, though at a much slower rate, according to the 2010 lodging forecast from PricewaterhouseCoopers Hospitality & Leisure Practice. More

Controversial plans to turn a farm into a bed and breakfast look set to be approved, despite 72 of a village's 80 residents objecting to the development. National Park Authority officers have urged members to back Amir Kohanzad's bid to transform Home Farm, in Sheldon, U.K., into a six-bedroom bed and breakfast catering specifically for vegetarians. Sag Harbor resident and attorney Linda Mintz approached the Sag Harbor Village Board of Trustees with an informal plan to convert the former Sag Harbor United Methodist Church into a 15-room bed and breakfast. However, board members expressed concern about the concept, questioning whether it would be an appropriate use for the historic, and now vacant, structure. More

They were defeated, according to aides on Capitol Hill and others observing the process, by a surprising foe: Representative Nydia Velázquez, the New York Democrat who is chair of the House Small Business Committee - though her own aide insists the other aides are wrong. Taxes to be imposed on B&Bs in Washington County, Texas

The Washington County Commissioners Court has voted to impose a hotel tax on bed-and-breakfast establishments in Washington County, Texas. The money will be used to promote tourism, the arts and historical preservation. The city of Brenham has a seven percent hotel and motel tax already in place. The state legislature gave Washington County the authority to impose the tax during its last session, and will be for businesses outside the city limits. Most of them are bed and breakfast operations. More
