Recently, hundreds of United Airlines mechanics protested the airline's contract offer by picketing outside key maintenance bases at the San Francisco, Houston and Orlando airports.
Earlier this week, mechanics voted down United's contract proposal by 93 percent. Mechanics also voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. Over 9,000 mechanics at United are represented by the Teamsters Union, which will petition the National Mediation Board for a strike release.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposes a $275,000 civil penalty against Atlas Airlines of Purchase, New York, for allegedly operating a Boeing 747 after performing improper maintenance on the aircraft.
The FAA alleges that Atlas maintenance workers improperly repaired the plane's landing gear after it would not retract on departure from Sydney, Australia. Atlas repaired the gear using the wrong part, and maintenance workers had to install the component upside down to get it to fit, the FAA alleges.

CNBC is reporting that Honeywell International Inc. and United Technologies Corp. "have recently held talks about a merger" that could establish a $94 billion company.
"The discussions occurred within the last two weeks and were focused on a deal in which Honeywell offered a premium, largely in stock with some cash, for the smaller United Technologies," CNBC's David reported. He noted that the most recent talks were initiated by Honeywell, but that the two companies have discussed merging at various times over the last year.

Sam Bousfield, CEO of Samson Motors and designer of the Switchblade flying sports car, recently unveiled the latest advances in the company's multi-year program to establish a viable flying car.
"The idea of landing at an airport, pushing a button to stow wings and tail, and drive to your destination not only brings us new-found freedoms, but by protecting the flying surfaces on the ground, you gain a much more viable mode of transportation," said Bousfield.
Congress is in the midst of a debate on how to best manage air traffic control services, and whether the traditional government role should change to a privately run system governed by a board of directors. It is an important matter but regardless of the direction Congress heads, it needs to ensure steady, long-term investment in air traffic modernization.
Without this investment, the significant and important modernization gains will be threatened, subjecting passengers to unnecessary delays and sustaining aviation operations that are less environmentally friendly.
Southwest Airlines Co. announced that its Ramp, Operations, Provisioning, and Cargo Agents have narrowly approved the tentative agreement that was reached with Union negotiators in late December. The Transport Workers Union Local 555 reports that 50.4 percent of those who cast ballots voted in favor of the five-year contract agreement.
The new contract provides wage increases and work rule improvements, while at the same time enhances Southwest's competitive standing within the industry.
