Congress wary of outsourcing aircraft maintenance

Congress last year mandated the Federal Aviation Administration step up oversight of the growing trend by U.S. carriers of outsourcing aircraft maintenance to foreign repair stations. The 2012 aviation authorization requires the FAA to ensure that foreign repair stations are inspected to guarantee standards consistent with U.S. requirements. More

Females interested in aviation can get more information at one of a number of events held in San Carlos, Calif., celebrating the Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. Today, about 6 percent of pilots are female in most developed countries, according to the Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide. Similarly, the percentage of female aircraft mechanics is less than 3 percent and female aeronautical engineers make up about 9 percent of their field. More

California: Altus AFB harvests aircraft mechanics through internship program

Since 1999, the 97th Maintenance Squadron at Altus Air Force Base has hired 112 students through an aircraft maintenance technician internship program it participates in with a training academy in the city of Altus, Okla. The Southwest Technology Center provides the initial aircraft technical training courses in airframe and aircraft engine skills to the mechanic candidates. More
