Is pilot shortage an even larger threat to aviation than government?

American to upgrade fleet with newer, more efficient aircraft

Tech crew chief Terry Charles of Tulsa, Okla., signed his name alongside company executives recently in Seattle for American Airlines to take possession of a new Boeing 777-300ER, the seventh in its fleet. A day earlier, he walked the floors of a plant in Everett, Wash., where the 777 and next-generation 787 are assembled. On previous visits, he looked over another plant where planes such as the 737 are produced.

UPS fined $4 million by FAA over aircraft maintenance lapses

The U.S. Transportation Department fined United Parcel Service Inc. $4 million for allegedly maintaining four cargo planes improperly and then flying them, the agency said in a statement. UPS's practices didn't follow Federal Aviation Administration rules, according to a recently-issued statement. Two DC-8 aircraft and two MD-11 aircraft were flown improperly on more than 400 flights between October 2008 and June 2009, the FAA said.

Source of 787 battery failures remains elusive

As Ethiopian Airlines and other Boeing 787 customers prepared to return their Dreamliners to service with battery system modification kits, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board conducted an exhaustive, two-day investigative hearing into the design and certification of the lithium-ion batteries implicated in the airplane's grounding. Sixteen witnesses testified and answered questions during the hearing on April 23 and 24 at the Board's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

NBAA's Maintenance Management Conference attracts record number of exhibitors, attendees

The National Business Aviation Association recently announced that a record number of exhibitors and attendees will participate in its Maintenance Management Conference (MMC2013), being held from April 30 to May 2 in Fort Worth, Texas. The exhibit hall at the Fort Worth Convention Center has sold out and will feature 140 exhibits, a 24 percent increase from last year's tally of 113, NBAA said.

-ATR -600 aircraft, certified by the FAA

Turboprop aircraft manufacturer ATR is pleased to announce that the newest ATR '-600 series' aircraft have just received their certification from the FAA, the American Federal Aviation Administration. This certification, for both the ATR 42-600 and the ATR 72-600, will enable the entry into service of these new aircraft in countries requiring FAA rather than EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) certification.
