When you harness a single powerplant to the nose of a brand-new airframe, that engine better be reliable. In this case the engine is GE Aviation's new advanced turboprop and the airframe is Textron Aviation's new single-engine turboprop, or SETP.
The move marks GE's most ambitious foray yet into the business and general aviation arena.
The FAA released a policy memo on March 2 that updates guidance on installation of ADS-B out systems, essentially allowing avionics shops to install ADS-B equipment on aircraft not covered by a supplemental type certificate (STC) without having to obtain a new STC. This new policy, said Bill Stone, Garmin senior business development manager, “significantly reduces cost, downtime and uncertainty about how long the aircraft is going to be down.” The installer does have to obtain permission from the original STC holder.
The FAA has opened comments until Aug.10 for changes to GA flight training rules that would affect a broad spectrum of pilots, including those pursuing private and commercial certificates. Its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking includes a long-anticipated proposal to use glass-cockpit, fixed-gear aircraft for commercial flight training instead of traditional complex aircraft with retractable gear.
Banyan Air Service is approved as an authorized dealer and installation facility for Advent Aircraft System's recent FAA STC for the advanced-technology GPS/digital anti-skid braking system (Advent eABS). This STC is for Beechcraft King Air B300/B300C equipped with Rockwell Collins Pro Line GPS 4000S or Garmin G1000/430W/530W avionics. "eABS is a proven, lightweight, low-cost, and easily-installed digital anti-skid braking system designed especially for turbine powered aircraft up to 20,000 lb. MTOW.
Rockwell Collins recently approved Duncan Aviation as an authorized service provider for repair, service and modification of its TDR-94 and TDR-94D transponders. The TDR-94D transponder is a solid-state, crystal-controlled receiver/transmitter designed for Tcas II-equipped business aircraft. The units can be upgraded to meet the upcoming ADS-B mandate for 2020.

The Airbus Perlan Mission II team, which aims to fly a pressurized glider to a record of 90,000 feet, is continuing its flight-test program in Minden, Nevada. Airbus CEO Tom Enders visited the site last weekend, and went for a flight in the glider with the project's chief pilot, Jim Payne. "Experiencing the Perlan 2 glider in flight was truly remarkable," said Enders.
