The booming field of aviation technology

The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that by 2014 nearly 40 percent of employees in large aviation and aerospace businesses will be eligible for retirement, creating a huge demand for trained technicians in the field. Initially, the sector will grow by 6 percent for aircraft equipment mechanics and technicians, who perform scheduled maintenance on airplanes and helicopters.

Everett aircraft company settles FAA penalties

An Everett aircraft maintenance company has agreed to pay $275,000 to settle two Federal Aviation Administration penalty claims. The U.S. attorney's office says Aviation Technical Services violated FAA regulations on replacing fuselage skins and supporting planes during work on more than 40 Southwest Airlines Boeing 737s.

FAA Approves AD Free Overhauls

Boeing plans $28 million expansion

Boeing is planning a $28 million expansion of a maintenance hangar at Port San Antonio, officials confirmed recently. "We are going to be expanding the hangar to accommodate some planned growth there at the site, which is exciting," Boeing spokeswoman Lori Moore said. "They're going to make room for more aircraft and then they're going to add some office personnel to it."

Repair station security rules linger at OMB

The long wait for the release of the final aircraft repair station security rule continues as the Office of Management and Budget extends its review of the new regulation past its 90-day window. After years of delay, the Transportation Security Administration in March received final clearance from the Department of the Homeland Security on the congressionally mandated rule and sent the document for OMB review on March 16.
