The FAA published a rule that it says "relieves burdens on pilots seeking to obtain aeronautical experience, training, and certification by increasing the allowed use of aviation training devices." The rule makes changes to a number of other areas as well, including further modifications to complex aircraft requirements for commercial applicants and credit for sport pilot training.
Earlier this month, StandardAero received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval for its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installing Honeywell JetWaveTM satellite communications systems and associated Ka-Band radomes on EASA-registered Gulfstream GV/GV-SP aircraft.
In December 2017, StandardAero completed the first STC program using Honeywell JetWave and Inmarsat's Global Xpress (GX) Ka-band satellite network for U.S.-based Gulfstream GV and GV-SP operators — which also included the terminal, router and purposely designed direct replacement Ka radome.
A proper FAA reauthorization may have to wait (again) thanks to this surprise retirement of a Supreme Court justice. All of the focus in Washington will be on the maneuvering ahead of President Donald Trump's pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy and unless everything goes exactly right for the long-awaited FAA bill, it's likely to be kicked down the legislative corridor.
It turns out that aircraft owners who upgrade their cockpits with the latest glass-panel avionics share some interesting similarities with shoppers for smartphones, flat-screen TVs, laptops or just about any other broadly adopted consumer electronics product.
When the first smartphones hit the market several years ago they were cumbersome to use, lacked capabilities and cost a small fortune. Early adopters had to have them, of course, but most people held onto their old phones, at least for a while.
Raisbeck Engineering recently received STC approvals for its five-blade composite swept propeller and four-blade aluminum swept propeller. Both propellers have just been approved for the Beechcraft King Air 300/300LW models.
Previously, the four-blade aluminum swept propeller received approvals for the King Air 90, King Air 200 series, and King Air B300 series.

Garmin will display a new training system at the Farnborough Air Show set to take place July 16 through 20. Being a tandem trainer, the system appears best suited for military and defense applications, but Garmin says it can be tailored to fleet operators in the air transport and business aviation market as well. "We're excited to offer this premium cockpit experience at Farnborough, which demonstrates just how versatile our systems can be while providing state-of-the-art capability and reliability in a value-added avionics package," said Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation marketing and sales.
Boeing unveiled a new concept for its first passenger-carrying hypersonic airplane at the June 25 to 29 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta. One of several hypersonic vehicle concepts spanning a wide range of potential applications under study by company engineers, the passenger vehicle could involve military or commercial applications.
