Researchers at Caltech have constructed an algorithm allowing for a UAV to herd birds away from an airport. According to a statistic noted in the researchers' report, the FAA documented 142,000 wildlife strikes between 1990 and 2013, with birds contributing involvement in 97 percent of the cases. Inspired by US Airways Flight 1549 when Chesley Sullenberger landed an Airbus A320 on the Hudson River after striking a flock of geese, the researchers hope their findings can prevent future bird-strike incidents.

However, aviators may not realize the level of preparation that goes into ensuring that such projects do not unnecessarily affect operations or pose a threat to aircraft or personnel. Awareness of airport construction begins with checking NOTAMs ahead of departure and throughout the trip, although this alone may not be enough to avoid surprises.

f you haven't looked at the Diamond DA40 lately, you're in for some surprises. For starters, the gasoline version isn't even in production. If you want to buy a new DA40 today, it's diesel or nothing — at least until next year, when the Lycoming IO-360-powered DA40 XLT returns. And although the diesel version, known as the DA40 NG, for "next generation," first appeared way back in 2002, the current iteration has undergone so many design enhancements and improvements that it doesn't seem fair to call it the same airplane. Diamond DA40 NG 2.0 seems like a more apt name for this economical four-seater that finally appears ready to be taken seriously in the U.S. market — and might even help resurrect it.

As charter operators and brokers innovate in how they use mobile apps in support of their businesses, it's important that they also keep regulatory concerns in focus. App-based tools matching passengers to seats on business aircraft offer new opportunities for the industry to provide lift to communities with little or no commercial service. However, charter brokers and operators should seek out professional and legal counsel beforehand to ensure they're complying with regulations.
