Since its launch in 1996, Bombardier Safety Standdown has grown into a year round effort dedicated to informing and inspiring aviation professionals to commit to lifelong learning in order to achieve higher standards of safety and professionalism. The annual Safety Standdown seminar gathers more than 400 pilots, crew members, maintenance technicians and managers each year to Wichita and reaches thousands more via webcast.
The Aircraft Electronics Association's second-quarter 2016 Avionics Market Report showed continued weakness in avionics spending, with total first-half worldwide sales by participating member companies of $1.115 billion, down 6.5 percent from a year ago. This amount, based on net sales price, includes all components and accessories for cockpits and cabins, as well as software upgrades and portable equipment.
To celebrate the Next Generation of Aircraft Maintenance Professionals, AMT is proud to announce its Next-Gen Awards Program. This year we will celebrate 40 aircraft maintenance professionals less than 40 years of age who clearly demonstrate the talent, ambition, and characteristics of the Next-Generation Aircraft Maintenance Professional. It is not a ranking, but rather a listing of individuals who have shown initiative, a capacity, or have made an impact to the aviation maintenance industry.

One of the key foundational elements of AIR Transformation is Industry Commitment. To successfully increase our efficiency and effectiveness, the Aircraft Certification Service (AIR) needs Industry to engage early on innovative ideas, embrace systems safety, place value on compliance, and work collaboratively with us to develop tools to measure and improve both FAA and company performance.
Over the next decade, the requirement for commercial aircraft engine work is expected to exceed $282 billion. The top 10 engine families will generate $200.8 billion accounting for 71 percent of all engine MRO demand.

Leonardo-Finmeccanica's first flying AW609 prototype has arrived in Philadelphia. The manufacturer recently resumed flight testing of the aircraft. Leonardo said involving the company's Philadelphia facility in the AW609 program signifies progress toward FAA certification, which is expected in 2018. The aircraft will soon relocate to the manufacturers Italian facility. Meanwhile, another AW609 is being assembled in Philadelphia and will likely enter the test fleet next year, said Leonardo.
As commercial aircraft generate huge caches of structural and system health-monitoring data, opportunities for predictive inspections and repairs are expanding. In tandem, sensor technology is further evolving as a key component in the process.
Innovation in MRO techniques, new maintenance-stingy aircraft and more durable engines and components notwithstanding, maintenance spending appears to be increasing slightly, even on a unit basis. According to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Airline Maintenance Cost Executive Commentary, direct maintenance cost per flight hour increased 12 percent in nominal terms from 2010 to 2014, or about 1.7 percent annually in real terms.
Lufthansa Technik (LHT) introduced a laser-based “augmented reality” interiors installation system to support completions and refurbishments of private aircraft cabins. Augmented reality, unlike virtual reality, provides users information in real time beyond what they perceive.
At least once a year, I try to take the temperature of the emerging aircraft diesel engine market. What's selling? Who's buying it? How are they doing with it? A recent sweep through this topic revealed that in new airplanes, not much is selling at all, diesel or otherwise.
With that established, shouldn't the diesel conversions be doing a brisk business, especially since Continental recently raised the TBR on its CD line of engines to 2,100 hours?

The pilot's voice crackled in my headset: "If your harness unbuckles, close the canopy and let me know. We don't want you flying out of the plane." This was not the "seatbacks up and tray tables stowed" safety briefing I was used to, but then, I was strapped into the rear cockpit of a 72-year-old North American Aviation AT-6 Texan.
It was early on a Sunday morning in November 2014. The winds were calm and just a few wispy clouds were painted across a clear blue sky — a perfect day for flying.
He was leaving from a job in his beloved Cessna Cardinal. He took off from a remote airport on a dark night. Light snow was falling. He did not make it home. He had simply exceeded his capabilities as a pilot.
He was an architect, a ski-resort founder, a community leader and an all-around good person. To Martha and me, he was a friend. He loved his flying and worked hard at it, yet on that night, he was not up to the task.
