Robert Norcross, a doctoral student at Northcentral University in Arizona, is conducting a research study — including focus groups — about aircraft maintenance technician decision-making, specifically when aircraft repair information is not included in maintenance repair manuals. The study's goal is to improve efficiency and reduce the amount of time and money spent reworking aircraft discrepancies.
An innovative surface engineering process, which allows manufacturers to improve the material properties of lightweight alloys, is reducing wear on 737 landing gear components. Operating an airline is an expensive business. Every time a plane is on the ground for maintenance work, it costs the operator money but, with lives at stake if components don't operate effectively, the price of failing to maintain aircraft properly is even higher.
When Yuichi Takagi of King City, California, begins his take-off roll in his biplane on Sept. 26 at the Salinas Airshow, the act — in and of itself — might not seem like such a big deal to the tens of thousands of people in the stands watching him.
But for Takagi, 43, the moment will indeed be auspicious: symbolizing the achievement of a dream and, he hopes, the start of a whole new aspect of his career in aviation.
"It will be an important moment," Takagi said. "But I probably won't savor it fully until I successfully complete my routine and get back down on the ground."

Qantas chose the GEnx-1B engine to power its recently ordered eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This engine order is valued at more than $400 million list price. Deliveries will begin in 2017.
"Qantas' selection of the GEnx engine for its newly announced Boeing 787-9 aircraft is another vote of confidence for this engine that is the leading engine choice of 787 Dreamliner operators around the world," said Chaker Chahrour, vice president and general manager of Global Sales & Marketing at GE Aviation.

According to author Tony Reichhardt: We wrote last year about Scotty Wilson's quest to build himself a replica of a Bugatti 100p racer and fly it. Recently, the dream came true.
It may not have been the prettiest landing, as Wilson reported on the project's Facebook page.
Still, after more than six years of work, Wilson's mood was mostly exhilaration. "The relevant news is we successfully flew the Bugatti 100P for the first time," he wrote. "The plane flew beautifully."

Robert DeLaurentis had 10 minutes to figure out if he would live or die.
He was flying solo over Southeast Asia when he lost oil pressure and power in the only engine in his Piper Malibu Mirage. His small aircraft had essentially turned from a complex flying machine into a glider, and it seemed like his attempt to fly around the world was coming to a premature end.

There's no need for mufflers in the blue skies above the surf, in the flying mules that strafe the Jersey Shore with half-price drink ads and marriage proposals all summer.
The 150-horsepower, straight-pipe sound is unmistakable to all who have ever planted their butts in the sand on a sunny weekend from Cape May to Sandy Hook.
Banner planes have flown above the breakers like sea gulls until sunset for as long as you can remember.
Government agencies and law enforcement have been quietly testing ways to disable rogue unmanned aerial systems, Reuters reported recently. In efforts to address security concerns that come with commercially available unmanned aircraft, authorities are developing technology to track and disable them. According to Reuters, New York's police department tested a system over the winter that uses microwaves to remotely retrieve a UAS from Times Square.
