Happy New Year! There are only a few days left before the conference early-bird rate ends Jan. 10! Don't miss the deadline! Remember a lucky winner who registered before the deadline will be drawn in a raffle to receive a $50 gift card.

Here is a brief line-up of our breakout sessions on Monday:
  • How to Defuse and Mitigate Confrontations: learn how to promote agent safety and enhance investigative and tactical techniques through education and realistic training and instruction. You will learn how to effectively defuse verbal altercations with defendants and others, how to effectively utilize and initiate verbal judo and how to recognize cultural and environmental hurdles while communicating with defendants, indemnitors and others.
  • Rockwood Insurance Programs: is an insurance agency based in Delaware and serves as the administrator of several nationwide management liability programs, including Employment Practices Liability, Life Agents Errors & Omissions and Medical Malpractice. Learn about their insurance products they can offer PBUS members.
  • State-to-State Bail Laws: learn about the various laws and requirements regarding the bail industry from state-to-state. With more than 30 years in the bail industry, no one knows more about this subject than Randy K. Parton, Senior Vice President of Lexington National Insurance Corporation.
  • Don't forget to visit our exhibit hall and learn about new products and services for your business. The exhibit hall will be open from 7:30-4:30 p.m. Network with friends and colleagues during our Monday evening happy hour mixer and new member reception from 5-6 p.m.

Florida Bail Agents Association

The Florida Bail Agents Association will hold their annual membership meeting Thursday, Jan. 29 from 1-4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express located at 3601 W. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares, FL 32778. Regional directors will be elected at the meeting. For a discounted room rate contact the hotel at 352-742-1600 and mention the association meeting.

Bluster about bail reform was a huge topic in 2014

"Bail Reform" — proclaimed by the governor from the steps of Trenton City Hall — was a big headline in 2014. And little else. Gov. Chris Christie, presidential hopeful, only set the wheels of reform in motion Aug. 11, when he spoke in Trenton of keeping violent suspects locked up and making bail easy for nearly all others.

Judge accepts man's offer of new Nike sneakers as bail

Massachusetts man convinced a judge he wouldn't be a flight risk by offering to post his new Nike sneakers as bail. "OK, we'll take them," Framingham District Court judge Douglas Stoddard said in response to the offer by 39-year-old Jason Duval, who was facing jail time on an outstanding warrant, MyFoxBoston reported.

Case puts sex-offender monitoring under fire

Sitting on her couch with her two dogs, Detective Laura Lomeli peered at a series of red GPS dots on her laptop, searching for clues about a young woman whose mangled, nude body had been discovered weeks before on a recycling facility's conveyor belt. Lomeli didn't know much about the woman beyond this: Her name was Jarrae Estepp. She was a 21-year-old mom. She had just arrived in Anaheim on a Greyhound bus from Oklahoma.
