Bail bond business takes to the street to drum up clients

A new bail bond company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is generating some comments and questions around both the Linn County Courthouse and Cedar Rapids City Hall. The questions aren't about the business itself, but rather about one mobile office location. Lord Stephen Range, owner of Discount Bail Bonds and Process Server, has a regular office location in the Armstrong Centre Building in downtown Cedar Rapids. But recently he parked a very visible, and mobile, office on the bridge directly across from the courthouse and jail.

Bounty hunter laws not being enforced

VideoBrief There are state laws in place meant to regulate bounty hunter, but the I-Team has learned that in many cases, those laws are not being enforced. Gene Travis, a veteran, said he was sitting with his wife on the front porch of his home when he noticed a strange vehicle. Travis went to check it out. Next thing he knew, his barn was being searched and Travis had a stun gun pointed at his back.

Fugitive goes on trial in 1992 slaying in crowded restaurant

Santiago Pedroso, 73, might never have been caught had he not walked into the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Philippines, in 2013 with an itch to travel. The computer went "Ping!" when he applied for a passport, and the stooped, graying suspect was soon in custody, Assistant District Attorney Richard Sax said.

Bill proposed to remove bail setting for some defendants

A Maine lawmaker has drafted a bill that if passed, would replace the state's cash bail system with a risk assessment model. The bill is similar to one that was passed by New Jersey last year, he said, and could reduce the annual operating costs of many of the state's lock ups; housing fewer inmates should, in theory, save taxpayers money.

Fugitive led cops on high-speed chase from Old Bridge, New Jersey to Brooklyn

A high-speed chase through New York City started when federal authorities tried to arrest a fugitive in Old Bridge, New Jersey, according to reports. NBC New York, which captured dramatic aerial footage of the incident, reported that Anthony Mazza, 41, was eventually arrested and charged with eluding and aggravated assault on police, but not before leading police on a wild chase through two states and two boroughs.
