professional insurance agents.
In other words, issues that are not just important but that are critical to your business. Members of Congress are back home in their districts for the August recess. Many are
running for reelection and are actively participating in community activities. Our goal is
to mobilize as many of you as possible to have a conversation with them and/or their

Congress and cybersecurity
For several years, Congress has been working on a way to
help the nation's businesses and governments protect
themselves from cyberattacks. All past efforts have been
controversial and have been opposed by this group or that. Just before the annual August recess, the U.S. House passed
one that may get support in the Senate and elsewhere. And
— surprise — it did so with a bipartisan effort.
Survey: The right level of insurance
The digital insurance broker PolicyGenius did a very
interesting — and insightful for PIA member agents
and agencies — study on how people view their
insurance and financial protection needs. Here's the company's conclusion: "There's a very
serious gap in insurance understanding, protection and access in the U.S., which
additional studies have show lead to financial hardships including bankruptcy."

Obama Administration appeals Medicaid ruling
Recently, a three-judge panel of the
U.S. Court of Appeals said it is illegal for the federal
government to pay for health insurance for those on
Medicaid subsidies and whose states do not have an
Obamacare exchange. The judges said the Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act specifies that only
a state exchange has the power to subsidize the insurance purchase. Another court — on the same day — said it is perfectly legal for the Internal Revenue
Services to write up regulations that handle the transaction.

2013 wedding cost, disasters and insurance
Travelers Insurance makes wedding insurance
their business. There are others who do it, but no
one else keeps tab of wedding disasters as well
as selling insurance for said disasters. And there
are a lot of claims resulting from those disasters
most of which — 34 percent — are related to problems
with the venue.
Obama Administration, consumers worry about HealthCare.gov future failure
We’re not done with the Obamacare federal
exchange technical glitches. To begin,
the producers and insurers who still are
awaiting payment for work done on behalf of
HealthCare.gov, have not yet seen the back end
of the federal exchange completed.
And the federal exchange is going to be taking on more states by November's open

How educated do you want your clients to be?
by Curtis M. Pearsall, CPCU, AIAF, CPIA, President, Pearsall Associates Inc. Special Consultant to the Utica National Agents E&O program
Imagine this scenario: A customer calls your agency in a
heightened state of anxiety to advise you that he is on
vacation and, upon getting back to the room, discovers
that the diamond in his wife's ring appears to have fallen
out of the setting and is gone. "At least we have
insurance on it" are his next words. Fortunately, this story has somewhat of a happy ending, as your agency representative
tells the customer that "yes, it was insured and we will go ahead and file the claim."
Unfortunately, not all calls like this have a positive outcome.
